Penn State-- They have an interim coach. Is he a long-term candidate?

almost certainly no. and it's unfortunate for him, because he might have been a candidate if not for the way paterno's term ended. now i can't imagine they'd hire from within, because even if bradley didn't know anything about sandusky's indiscretions he did see the guy walking around a lot, and was sandusky's immediate successor.

the washington post reported they contacted mike london (UVA coach) before firing paterno, but he doesn't seem to be interested, and he denied the report unequivocally. i'm sure urban meyer's name will be kicked around. a lot of people used to think that they'd hire someone who had spent time at psu as a coach previously (al golden, greg schiano) but because of the sandusky thing, that seems a lot less likely now.

personally i'm pulling for rich kotite.

is dooley really a serious candidate to get fired? i know UT hasn't been good the last two years, but they dumped fulmer and then had kiffin ditch them a year later... they've had a low # of scholarship players and still been around .500. dooley wasn't really an inspired hire but i don't think he's been bad enough to warrant firing yet.

i don't know how big a chance Dooley has of getting fired. I was writing every name I've heard tossed around.

forgot Ohio State, probably

I did. I don't know the story with Fickell, either. Is he just an interim, or is there a chance he stays?

boy am i not excited for psu to enter this [expletive] show. if they get someone like urban meyer or whatever, fine, but there's a lot better chance that they end up with a guy who's had a good run recently in the mid-majors, or a highly-regarded coordinator at a big program. with those guys it seems like such a crapshoot as to whether you end up with a chip kelly/gary pinkel type, or (much more likely) a turner gill/dan hawkins/mike stoops-type bust.

UCLA--Might get to a bowl. Don't know if it's enough to save him. Raisin?

Even if they did fire him (I doubt they will fire Neuheisel if they make a bowl), I'm sure UCLA will go for another crappy incestuous hire with UCLA ties.

weren't you quite happy with them hiring neuheisel a few years ago? not trying to troll you or anything; i thought it was a good move at the time.

Yeah, I thought it was a good hire but he's been a disappointment in every way except for recruiting his first 2 years.

UCLA football is very close to complete irrelevance (if they haven't already achieved it) despite playing in one of the most ideal locations in the country.

And soon-to-be mentor of Andrew Luck?: "Legendary former Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning quickly discovered something in his role as co-chairman of the selection committee charged with hiring the Rebels' next football coach. He has learned that imagination runs wild when compiling a list of candidates to replace lame duck coach Houston Nutt, fired a week ago effective at the end of the regular season. How wild? Try the suggestion that Archie's famous No. 2 son, injured Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning, should retire from the NFL because of his neck injury and coach the Rebels. ‘I've gotten about 20 or 25 e-mails from people in that regard,' said the elder Manning, who was in town Monday night to speak to the Touchdown Club of Memphis. "I passed that on to Peyton. He said, 'Just tell them that I'm 0-10 as an assistant for Indianapolis.'"

And for those that can't fathom googling an excerpt to find out where this is from:

Over the past 4 seasons (2008-2011) Illinois has had 6(!) bye weeks, with two in both 2009 and 2010. Their record following these bye weeks? 0-6:

2008: Lost to Penn St 38-24

2009: Lost to OSU 30-0, Lost to Cincinnati 49-36

2010: Lost to OSU 24-13, Lost to Fresno St 25-23

2011: Lost to Michigan 31-14

Since this is the only interesting part of college football to me at this point, I thought I'd start a thread. Here are schools looking (or possibly looking) for a new head coach.

Texas A&M-- Mike Sherman has guided the preseason top 10 team into several embarrassing collapses this year. Don't know if he'll be canned. If not, he probably won't have many big leads to blow next year in the SEC.

I wish we'd fire that hunk of [expletive] but I don't see it happening. Our AD gave him a stupid contract with no buyout. We'd owe him around $10MM if we fired him now, I think.

the problem with firing zook is that there's really no one that illinois could get that would be better.

The dump truck is already en route to Bill Cowher's house.

that nerdy butler guy is so inspirational that he could probably get a good football team too

send him two dump trucks and let him coach both teams

They don't have any sturdy folding chairs laying around?
