man we are going to be so bad next year

Yeah we aren't going to be good. I would think the Garza to Rangers talks will heat up if the Jays did indeed win the bidding on Darvish. Losing Garza and going with someone like Scott/Lahair/Loney at 1B would put us in top 3 pick territory in the 2013 draft.

i'm trying to think of two worse teams if that actually happens.

Can we really do worse than the Astros?

A lineup of DeJesus, Crisp, Castro, Loney, Stewart, Byrd, Soto, and Barney would be laughably bad. That said, it's just not happening.

Not worse, but on par with the Mariners, Astros, Mets and Pirates

I'm thinking not. That roster is brutal.

I'll give you the Astros.

Mets are going to be pretty damn awful especially if they trade Wright.

I don't think running a lineup out there similar to that is really that out of the question.

I don't believe him but FWIW, Phil Rogers believes the winning bid may be less than that for Ma

He could be more expensive to sign than Matsuzaka (six years, $52 million) but it's possible he won't require as high of a posting fee as the $51 million that went from the Red Sox to the Seibu Lions for his rights because few Japanese players have lived up to their billing in recent years.

@JonHeymanCBS: rumor is, at least 1 darvish bid was "sky" high. may have been "north'' of $50M. again, unconfirmed.

As long as we could end up with a rotation of Felix Hernadez, Garza, Darvish, Gio Gonzalez/Shields, and Dempster/Zambrano it just might be a near .500 team.

One GM whose team bid on Darvish believes Toronto's the favorite. Another thinks it's Cubs. One more says Mariners. The point: No one knows.

I'm not going to lie, I don't think any of these jokers know what these teams actually bid.

I have a feeling that the Cubs won it. They have been very stealth in this process, their stated mission is to acquire top end talent, with big market resources at their disposal, and Theo has obviously won the bidding for a high profile pitcher before so its likely is willing to submit a big bid.

But I guess I could see the Rangers with their new revenue streams and loss of Wilson just throwing up $80 mil randomly so that they virtually guarantee a win.

A few thoughts:

The Japanese team selects the winning bid, but not necessarily the highest bid, correct? If so:

Darvish has stated he doesn't want the bid to be too high because that would mean a reduced contract. It's possible a 2nd or 3rd highest bid could take it?

I'm pretty sure highest bid wins, regardless of what the Japanese team wants.

It's a blind bid so they won't know who bid (I think)

The Japanese team is only told the amount of the highest bid and given a yes or no. They don't have the option of taking any other bids.

It's highest bid. For what it's worth, PSD insider has heard varying reports, nothing concrete. Personally, he's not a fan and if bidding is 50 mill plus, hopes we don't win. Thinks he's a diva and may only have 2 major league pitches.

Any chance Epstein/Hoyer decided to go strong after Darvish in order to sign him and then trade Garza to one of the teams that lost out, i.e. Texas, Toronto.

That would be one smart way to use money to increase assets.

if they don't get fielder, it's almost inevitable that its going to be something comparable to that.

I absolutely think he's considered that, but that's not *the* reason or anything.

Definitely possible. A Garza/Darvish combo would be pretty solid. But, I could see where Theo would want to offset some of Darvish' cost, trade Garza, and get more cost effective guys in return. Including another potential ace type. Maybe put some of that saved money into Fielder or somewhere else. My honest guess though, is he just wants them as a 1-2 combo.

Signing a guy and then trading someone else as a linked move isnt something that occurs often. Complicated scenarios just dont work unless it is a 3 way trade. He would consider it obviously but the link between the two doesnt exist.
