Exactly my point. I could see where Epstein essentially views Darvish and Garza contracts as a wash with the posting fee being a cost of receiving high level, close to the majors prospects. Seems like a smart move.

Darvish is going to make a good bit more than Garza.

MLB TV Network is saying the winning bid will not be announced until next Tuesday. But the host didn't say why they would wait the full week to announce it.

Peter Gammons admitted no one really knows about the bids but based on GMs he has spoken to Texas and Toronto were the teams he heard the most.

I guess the Nippon Ham team's acceptance isn't official until the end of four business days.

Tuesday would make sense then. Thanks

They've got to want to see Darvish against big league competition before pulling the trigger on a deal like that. The rotation isn't exactly stocked as it is. They trade Garza - Darvish blows - Zambrano -?????. Dempster isn't getting younger. That'd be a whole whack of question marks.

If they paid that much to get Darvish, then they've already made the choice that he IS going to be the man. There is no wait and see at that point. If he ends up a bust, they've got bigger issues than having traded Garza for some top prospects.

It's highest bid. For what it's worth, PSD insider has heard varying reports, nothing concrete. Personally, he's not a fan and if bidding is 50 mill plus, hopes we don't win. Thinks he's a diva and may only have 2 major league pitches.

There's no doubt that he's a diva.

Nobody's a guarantee. Everybody's a question mark. Garza could blow his arm out. Or he could just go back to what he was before last season.

Based on everything we know about Darvish, he should be awesome. That's enough for me.

Nothing on Darvish, but in that thread over on PSD, the insider menttioned we're willing to pay 80% of Z's deal and can't get a sniff.

That's crazytalk. If that's the case, we're lucky to be in a league with so many dumb GMs.

And we should also keep him if that's the case.

It's only crazy if they think we've bottomed out the price. If they think waiting a bit longer could get him to come even cheaper then they're doing the right thing.

Not really. Because they have to worry about the other 28 teams taking him.

Zambrano at $3.6 million is a super-duper steal. That's a fantastic bargain. You can't risk waiting to try to drive it down another million because you certainly have to assume that someone else will take it if you don't.

His value is less than 3.6 million/year for two years? That's absurd.

One year.

Unless you see him being a Cy candidate next year.

Oh yeah...I forgot 2013 was an option. That makes it even more ridiculous.

If he finishes first or second in Cy Young Award voting in 2011 or finishes in the top four in Cy Young balloting in 2012 and is healthy at the end of the fifth year, he has the option for a sixth year at $19.25 million.

Nobody's going to mention how dumb we are for being willing to pay 80% of Z's contract?

This.

I figure there are two options.

1) It's not really true.

2) Zambrano really did do something truly heinous that the Cubs kept under wraps in the media but somehow all of MLB knows about. I can't think of what that would be.

I'm going with 1.

Yeah, I'm just flat out not believing that.

I just think there are lots of pitchers out there like Z at this point and most of them don't have his baggage. So teams are exploring other options and some of them might have Z as a fallback plan. I was a little surprised at 80% though-I would think the Cubs could have gotten a team to bite at the 5 million mark.

None of it seems believable.

Right. The only way that Zambrano is actually being offered for 4 million and not getting any takers is if they're asking for useful pieces in return.

There's no way the Cubs will eat 80% of Z's contract. It was Gammons who said it, and I don't think he really has a clue what's going on. He's probably just confusing Zambrano with Soriano.
