I feel like a creepy stalker, but this is from an article in her hometown Quad Cities newspaper. I'll omit her name even though it would take 0.5 seconds to figure it out. It'll hopefully prevent her from googling her name and seeing her neighbor blabbing about her on a message board.

She actually has worked for the Cubs since scoring an internship shortly after her graduation from Northern Illinois University in March of 2001.

She spent the last five seasons as the coordinator of mezzanine suites at Wrigley Field. When Arlene Gill , executive assistant to a succession of Cubs general managers dating back a quarter of a century, retired after the 2007 season, she stepped up and applied.

She got the job in late November, started in January and a week later was sitting at a dinner table with Hendry, Kosuke Fukudome and the Japanese outfielder’s cadre of agents while the coveted free-agent’s contract details were finalized.

Among her myriad duties is administering contracts for the Cubs 40-man roster, serving as a liaison between Major League Baseball and Hendry, handling expense accounts and leasing accomodations for the baseball operations staff, and seeing that visas are in order for foreign-born players like Fukudome and a host of Latin-bred Cubs.Early in spring training, she was busy escorting Carlos Marmol, Carlos Zambrano and the rest of those foreign-born Cubs to a Mesa drug store to have pictures taken for the passports each will need when the Cubs travel to Toronto for an inter-league series vs. the Blue Jays in June.

So I talked to my neighbor today who was the assistant to the GM under Hendry and will have that role under the new GM.

The new GM doesn't get to hire his own assistant? What kind of nonsense is that?

I dunno, thats what she told me. She worked her way up from an intern at the company serveral years ago so I don't think they'd just let her go because Hendry was canned. Her offical title (on the website) is Executive Assistant to Vice President/General Manager.

I have no idea what the role of Executive Assisant is, but I assume their job isn't baseball related. Its all about being organized and being able to effectively communicate and such. So I don't think its absurd to say the GM wouldn't get to choose, at least to the extent that they would retain the previous person at first.

Regardless, my point was that she's not going to be let go because Jim Henrdy was let go. She'll still be with the Cubs in some capacity. I don't know what she does on a daily basis, but from looking at the Cubs website, she is one of 17 people listed under the "Baseball Operations" heading. I honestly think she has a bigger role than answering the phone for the GM, but I could be mistaken. She started as an intern with the Cubs in the marketing department 6-7 years ago and worked her way up to the role.

Is she an attractive blonde?

I get confused whether that Hendry's assistant or his companion.

Wow I never thought about that. However based on my memory of her posts, it doesn't really match the personality of my neighbor, but you never know.

If that's the case though, RedIvy probably still lurks here, and I will probably get an angry knock my door tonight from her.

As with all references to women on the internet, I've already formed an opinion about her appearance and asked her to be facebook friends.

At the risk of being UMFan-level creepy, google her. You don't want pics.

That's not creepy, that's just looking out for your fellow man.

I don't think Bob googled her for Calves' sake.

Yea, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a secretary and an executive assistant. An executive assistant implies more responsibility IMO. So the executive assistant would be someone that the company has invested more capital into developing and wouldn't immediately can just for the new manager. When I think secretary I think of someone who answers the main phone line, takes messages, keeps the office supplies stocked, and leaves the job behind at 5:01. Thats not what I imagine an executive assistant to be.

What you seem to be describing is the difference between a receptionist and an executive assistant. It has nothing to do with canning somebody.

Has thread become some kind of group stalk?

So if you're not canning them, the new management (in any business) would retain them, assuming their performance is good. Basically, I'm sure Hendry didn't bring this person in, so it shouldn't be expected they leave with him.

I'm not expecting them to leave, I'm just commenting that it seems odd to me that a new head of baseball operations wouldn't have his choice of executive assistant.

This is amazing. Can someone make this happen?

Well on that article about the current assistant, it says right in it that the previous executive assistant spanned multiple GMs and a quarter of a decade. I know from my own experience at my company when the new CEO came in, our executive admin assistant stayed in the same role.

We've read stuff saying that actual baseball people like Fleita may be forced on the new GM, so an executive assistant doesn't seem to odd. Sure if they decide after a year, they want a change it would be granted, but right away? That would seem odd, IMO.

Where have you read Fleita may be forced on the new guy?

My suspicion at the time was that Arlene Gill herself was RedIvy, but that was just a guess, nothing confirmed.

I'm a little skeptical about one's neighbor 'leaking' anything about the search for our new GM. There's a great deal of confidentiality involved in a position like that and she would have violated that trust. She may find herself out of a job if Tom Ricketts found out about it. Tell her to zip it.

Our new GM should not have anyone forced upon him, he should able to hire/fire who he needs to do the job he was brought on board to do.
