Why are the beat writers so obsessed with Ned Colletti? He really doesn't fit the profile of what Ricketts is looking for at all.

Isn't Colletti from Chicago or used to work there or something? That local tie might be why they assume he'll be a candidate.

Because he speaks the same language as them: Drooling buffoon.

Also he was a [expletive] PR guy when he worked for the Cubs, of course they love him, his job was to slob their knobs.

I didn't know he was the PR guy. That explains it.

And he left the Cubs to be a PR guy in the Giants organization. How this incompetent boob ever climbed the ranks of baseball management is beyond me.

Probably had something to do with all the knob slobbing.

Popped up on Roto

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts has been gathering information about Rays VP Andrew Friedman and Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti for their vacant general manager position.

While many believe Friedman would be reluctant to leave the Rays, one source tells Wittenmyer that part of the reason the Cubs are interested in Colletti is the likelihood that he would try to bring Ryne Sandberg back to the organization as manager. Ricketts has also discussed the possibility of hiring Yankees GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi in a package deal. Needless to say, it seems like an unlikely scenario. While Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has heard some rumblings that Billy Beane could be willing to leave Oakland, White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and Padres VP Josh Byrnes would appear to be the early favorites for the job.

I'm not going to believe anything I hear from the media. They had no clue Hendry was going to be gone. Ricketts plays things close to the vest it appears. I'll wait until the press conference.

Coletti + Sandberg...the board would freaking explode.

I might close it down and abandon sports if that happened.

The same way John McDonough became team president(!). These guys know how to sell themselves.

But Team President the way McDonough was team president was a different situation. He wasn't involved in the on-field product.

Aside from being a current GM Coletti has none of the characteristics Ricketts said he was looking for. Also, he's a Hendry clone of sorts. I just can't see it happening given what Ricketts said after firing Hendry. I'm also not sold that Ricketts is in love with Sandberg. He had to know about Sandberg's coaching before he signed-off on Quade.

I will still be a Cubs fan if both are working for the Cubs, but I'll complain a lot.

Really? My understanding is that he was a direct successor to MacPhail on the Tribune org chart, and was involved in the monster contracts of the '06/'07 offseason. He sounded very much like a factor on the baseball side when he was talking about putting the Cubs in the World Series on that dreary day at the end of the 2006 season.

McDonough got the job because MacPhail left just as the sale process was heating up and they weren't going to go out and hire a new guy. He was just minding the ship. Coletti moved from one team's PR department to another team's PR department and became a GM after that, which is completely different from the president's job and the way McDonough got that job.

Either way, he was clearly a caretaker charged with overseeing the Tribune's divestment of the Cubs, not a long-term choice.

You are right, Colletti is the bigger [expletive], by far.

lol @ the idea that the Cubs better get Ned [expletive] Coletti in place if they hope to get Sandberg on board as manager

I love the notion that you would hire a GM based on which manager you expect him to hire.

New York --

There is increasing thought among baseball people, including some who know him well, that A's general manager Billy Beane might consider an offer if the Cubs do approach him about their GM vacancy, as expected.

Beane is signed through 2014, but his relationship with owner Lew Wolff is believed to be good enough that Wolff would grant him permission to interview elsewhere if he so desired. Plus, Beane has a hand-picked successor, assistant general manager David Forst, ready to take the job. Forst has chosen not to pursue several other general-manager opportunities.

Beane was out of town Wednesday and unavailable for comment, but in 2002, he accepted the Red Sox's GM job only to change his mind, citing, among other things, his love for his job in Oakland and for the organization.

Maybe I just loved reading Moneyball too much but i'd still love Beane, even with the A's recent struggles. I'm not going to pretend to know much about how involved he is with Soccer, but if he legitimately wants this job, i'd trust that he'd put in the time.

Cherington is climbing my lists by the day. These media blurbs make me sad, but I am wishing away all the bad thoughts.

08:14 AM ET 08.25 | Theo Epstein may be offered the chance to end yet another epic championship drought. Red Sox owner John Henry checked in via e-mail on the rumors and speculation that [Epstein] could become a target of the Chicago Cubs, who just fired longtime GM Jim Hendry, particularly if they offer Epstein a promotion overseeing the entire baseball operations. "This kind of speculation happens from time to time to successful GMs and managers," Henry wrote. "The Cubs have one of the best presidents in baseball. I think this shows how highly regarded Theo is by the media and baseball in general." ESPN reported yesterday that the Cubs could go after Epstein in a bid to end a World Series drought that dates back to 1908.
