There's no in-state competition, true, but tons of out-of-state competition. Outside of staying close to home, why would a top Illinois recruit choose Illinois over Duke, Kentucky or North Carolina?

why would anyone from anywhere?

the advantage illinois has is that it has access to illinois recruits that schools that aren't the blue-bloods don't. the question that you really want to ask is why would a top illinois recruit go out of state to a school that isn't a blue-blood?

furthermore, illinois was (is?) in on jabari parker because the coaches have been in on him since the beginning. the advantage here is that the coaches can build relationships with potential recruits at a younger age. that's an advantage that not even duke has.

hearing parker talk, the kid has some loyalty to the state, as well.

why do you need to be the coach at the in-state school to be able to build relationships with those kids at an early age? Couldn't any coach do that just as easily?

You could, but most coaches don't know about kids as frosh and sophomores unless they are familiar with a program or area.

they could, but not just as easily. bill self isn't going to waste his time recruiting some kid in 8th grade when he can swoop in and get another kid, just as talented, from another state in 12th grade. he's got a dump truck and a wizard, why would he need to have dinner with some family in joliet if he's not even sure that kid will be playing at a high level in 4 years?

the illini can do these things.

because who doesn't love writing off a dinner as a business expense? Especially in Joliet?

Chicago seems like one of the hardest cities to recruit. DePaul is inchicago and can't even sniff any worthwhile recruits. I have no idea what the magic formula is (outside of Calipari's $1000 handshakes)

if robert smith comes and groce is ok with him being named as the first assistant, i'm cool with that and will likely change my stance on groce.

Have there been any rumors that Smith would be an assistant (outside of fan speculation)? I would love it if it happened. I just thought that he put his name into the ring for the HC job.

It is frustrating. It seemed Illinois was on its way to doing it in the late 80's, and then Bruce Pearl happened. Then it seemed they were going to do it again with Self, then Kansas happened. If they can get back to where they were a decade ago, I think more of the top recruits would start to go there. I think if we were coming off of seasons like 2001-2004 (not even the title game season) we might have a really good chance at Parker. Get someone like him and others would follow like Ohio State.

The magic formula is not so magical and widely known. Suck up to the HS coaches and get on their good side and you're golden.

Yes, but they have one glaring issue they can't do anything about....the terrible stadium location.

Are they trying to do anything about this? Because they would absolutely own Chicago with a downtown stadium.

St. Johns doesn't "own" New York and they play in Madison Square Garden. When it comes to recruiting the CPL the national programs will always have first pick, followed by the Big Ten and then DePaul.

So apparently the evidence that tipped off the Jamar Samuels investigation was a grocery store receipt that someone found on the floor/in the trash. No wonder Martin wanted to get out of there.
