So ignoring the always iffy proposition of adding a back of the rotation arm from the remainder of the free agent class, who are the arms that realistically battle it out for the 5 spot, and in what order do we perceive their potential to earn that spot?

Silva- final year of a big contract, but health issues

Cashner- A bit of a boost being a lefty in a rotation that is all righties

Russell-Another lefty in a semi-crowded bullpen

Samardjiza

Carpenter

Jay Jackson

Cashner's right-handed.

Cashner is a righty. Also, if Carpenter and Jackson are in the discussion, Casey Coleman ought to be as well. And Thomas Diamond.

My guess is the likely 5th starter is either Silva (if healthy enough) or Cashner. Russell might have a shot if he pitches really well in spring training, but my guess is it comes down to the first two.

Kevin Goldstein of BP says Morris has an average FB, plus slider, and plus command. Thinks he's a big league reliever, but not back end of pen.

Cheap bullpen fodder. Could do worse.

According to Keith Law, Burgess doesn't recognize breaking pitches at all. Won't be a regular unless that changes. Projects him as a backup because of that.

Funniest thing about this: Burgess is going to be ranked 19th in BA's top 30 that's coming out for the Nats. Morris? 18th.

No idea what Burgess did to decrease his value THAT much over the course of a season that looks, on paper, to have been solid at least.

This is a good way to prove you didn't watch a single game last year

haha. Whoops. While I didn't miss the entire season, apparently I never watched a single game Cashner pitched in. I was so over Lou/Hendry last year that I honestly didn't watch much. Hence the question about the realistic options for the rotation.

You missed a lot of very good Starlin Castro, and some decent Cashner, Coleman, Colvin....

Morris has a heavy 93-95 MPH sinker as well, by the way, according to Callis. Whoever the 3rd guy is(I guess they know), he didn't make the Nats top 30, according to them.

Just read this about Burgess:

Despite hitting 72 home runs over four seasons, Burgess has yet to slug .500 in a full season.

Definitely seems like the feast or famine type.

I actually saw Starlin quite a bit, and I did keep up with the team through this site a bit, but the team was a letdown to me going into the season and I'm not sure I sat through an entire game and actually "WATCHED". I might have listened while the game was on in the background.

Wasted a whole season of MLB EI in the process. In a typical season, I watch well over 100 Cubs games a year. The desire just wasn't there. With Lou gone and the addition of some players I don't hate, I'm probably going to be back to my normal self watching games this year.

Justin Havens perception..... Who?? Maybe because I am not a huge Gorz but please do not compare Garza to Gorzelany..

Garza's performance isn't quite as good as his reputation (yet), and Gorzelanny has been undervalued, but that's a pretty poor comparison. Using their 2010 numbers. Ignoring the big difference in stuff. And as a result, the fact that Gorzelanny is bumping against his ceiling while Garza still has projection(which makes the 18 months of age in their prime pretty important now). The lip service to the difference in competition. Just...blech.

Awesome! I had like 3 Michael Burgess autographed rookie cards a few years back. Not by choice, his just happened to be the ones I kept pulling form boxes of Bowman.

Regardless, this is kinda awesome.

That's what bugs me about Burgess. The Cubs have had a shaky history with hitters who have issues striking out and making contact. Now, at least Burgess has shown the ability to draw walks and also had a possible breakthrough in AA at the end of this past season (depending on how much weight you want to put on ~85 PAs). It's not like the Cubs will have to build him from the ground up.

Still, curious. It's hard to ignore his upside.

Graham Hicks is the 3rd player in the deal. Pretty young, but not much in the way of results in his first couple seasons.
Posted

So for Gorz, we got: a high-upside 21 year-old outfielder, a reliever who could contribute to the pen within the next year or two and a young pitcher with some raw talent despite little results.

Not bad, actually pretty darn good. More than I thought we'd get for Gorzelanny, no doubt.

Can't believe some of the love Gorzelanny is getting around here...he's really not that good. He gives up over a hit/inning and walks boat loads.

Gimme the trade

The reaction in this thread has been almost entirely positive for the trade.
