And then they'll add Juan Pierre and he'll get on base at a .390 clip and steal 60 bases.

You mean slugging % right?

Nope, not that one either.

Percentage of throws that reach the cutoff man without bouncing

Percentage of ground balls hit that were fielded by the second baseman?

I was looking at Carlos Penas career stats on BBR, and he's always been a gread defensive 1B, he's always been in the negatives in dWAR. last year he was -0.5 and a career -5.7. What am I missing in regards to this?

While he's a magician around the base receiving throws, he doesn't have great range on groundballs.

Fangraphs has a stat where they keep track of the number of scoops a first baseman had, and according to that Pena led the majors by quite a bit. Though that is unfair to compare considering our left side of the infield had more bad throws than probably any other team.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that Reyes "loved his visit" to the team's new ballpark this past Wednesday, and he would like to play in Miami. SI.com's Heyman hears that Reyes is the team's top free agent target (Twitter link).

-Within the same piece, Frisaro says that people connected to the team have told him that their offer to Pujols "probably isn’t close to being enough" to land the free agent slugger.

-Talks with Reyes, Pujols, Madson, and Buehrle are "preliminary" according to Heyman (on Twitter), so there's no threat of all four players accepting offers.

-ESPN's Buster Olney called the Marlins' strategy fascinating (on Twitter), but cautions that it is risky. The 1997 team also went for quick fixes, then had to tear it all down immediately after winning the World Series.

I take it that they didn't break out the mythical 10/300 offer.

they did, however, win the world series. honestly, I don't see this all eggs in one year's basket as a bad thing for a team like the Marlins. Then you have a fire sale and stock the farm.

I don't think they could replicate that fire sale (assuming that's what they'd want to do, of course). It's a different environment & I have a hard time seeing how they could deal big contracts, especially a reliever like Madson

I expect him to resign with the cards, but I wish we would just offer him $300 million just to make the cardinals match their offer and have no other money for anybody else. Also, has it been reported anywhere about when Fielder or Pujols plan on meeting with any other teams?

Hypothetical. I assume we will talk to Pujols and Fielder. If your second choice is ready to sign a deal do you take it and give up a shot at getting your first choice. So say Fielder is ready to sign at 6/150 but your still in talks with Pujols. Do you give up the shot at Pujols (or turn it around if you prefer Fielder).

I don't think we have to worry about this kind of scenario. Boras will hold Fielder out, until Pujols signs and sets the market. Leaving the Pujols' "losers" more desperate and willing to up the ante for Prince. I see no way Prince signs first here, it's typical Boras and what makes him so effective usually: he waits for the market to develop and holds out for every last penny. In this case, it means waiting out Pujols before dropping his client down into a bidding free for all that's probably going to ensue, once Albert is off the table. To answer your question though, I'd sign whichever one was willing to commit first, because it's better to get one than to mess around and miss out on both.

as for the marlins, i see a lot of this a PR stunt. it may or may not be true and this is all pure speculation on my part, but with the crap attendance they've had, they need to stir the pot.

making a FA a "substantial" offer, doesn't mean jack, a "competitive" offer, thats another story. would you, or I, or anyone, consider say, a 7 year 133m contract substantial? yes. 133m is substantial money. is it competitive? heck no, not for what say, albert or prince are looking for.

imagine this, imagine living in florida...the news is probably how they made offers to 3 FA's. are they going to get all 3? most likely not. almost certainly not. but its still news and its still talked about. the team most talked about in baseball right now, is probably THE miami marlins, and they have yet to ink a big player. but everyones talking about them. get some excitement down there, drop a new name, logo, and awful stadium, and its all still news.

if i were a GM, and i thought i had 1% chance to sign albert or prince, i'd fly them in and take the chance. you don't know till you try. do i think either of the first basemen are going to down there? heck no.

considering they draw 14,000 or so per game, they need to drum up interest in an area thats never proven to be a baseball hotbed in terms of fans attendance. give the fans hope, show them that they are trying, or at least give them the illusion that they are trying.

They have to come away with something though. People won't give a [expletive] that they persued these players if none of them sign and they enter the season with another $57 mil payroll. I think they are relatively serious about Pujols (although I question that when I read how their offer wasn't in the ballpark of what he is asking for), but it won't at all ruin their offseason if they don't get him. Signing Reyes (who I am pretty sure they are serious about) and taking a stab at Pujols will go a long way for the casual fan.

Boras to meet with Theo to test the waters on Prince this week.

Fielder's agent Scott Boras, who is also in Milwaukee, said Monday that he will schedule meetings with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer to get a feel for where the Cubs stand under their new management.

"Prince has hit well at Wrigley Field and he's done well in that division," said Boras, who also represents Cubs free agent Carlos Pena. "[The Cubs and I] haven't talked yet, but we will."

That's the meeting I want pictures of. Get it done, Theo. Prince should feel honored you're taking this meeting, so be prepared for him and Boras to offer you a substantial discount for your services.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, please. I was just getting worried that we hadn't heard about any meetings yet.

I actually kind of like the whole secrecy thing personally. Yeah, it makes it hard for us to speculate, but it's probably more effective.

We really havn't heard much of anything in regards to Prince yet with any team. It is great news to hear though.

People didn't give an F when they actually went out and got guys the first time, and won, and then did it again, and won.
