Wouldn't taking QB's with the first pick two years in a row only add to the train wreck that it's already been?

It's not ideal, but I just don't see how you can possibly pass up a talent like Luck, especially if a new CBA is reached and Carolina doesn't have to pay him 50M or so guaranteed.

You pass on Luck by trading down for the biggest package of players you can get.

I submit that Carolina's talent level isn't that bad. They have a lot of high picks along the line, a stud-malcontent WR that probably will play better with a real QB, two good running backs, and some pieces on defense. The right QB and right hire at coach could turn things around quickly...although the division looks tough.

I don't know that he will, that's a lofty expectation, but if their scouts believe in him that much, I see no problem in taking him despite Clausen's presence. You can always trade Clausen and recoup some of the value you put into him.

Steve Smith can't be considered a stud anymore. He hasn't done much for 2 years (due to QB), but he'll be 32 by the time the season starts. Nowhere near the age where WRs are still studs after 2 dud years.

Also, D'Angelo Williams, both starting OLBs, their leading sack man, starting CB, and starting C are all FAs that may jump if a winning team flashes them some cash.

Schefter changing his mind on Marvin Lewis:

Lewis left the Bengals complex when the two sides could not agree on franchise's direction and his future there is in serious jeopardy.

Why do the Bengals want to keep Lewis?

Yeah, I'm not sure why they would want to keep him, nor do I see why he'd want to stay either. I don't think he's much of a coach personally, but I think he'd be able to find another job as a head coach and it'd almost definitely be a better gig than he's got now.

Annnnnnd Lewis is a done deal, back with the Bengals.

Lewis, who was widely expected to be on the way out after his contract expired at the end of the 2010 season, has instead signed a new contract to return for 2011 and, presumably, beyond.

The Bengals announced on Twitter that they had completed the deal. That announcement was a rather surprising reversal, as it came just an hour after the same Twitter account posted, “Despite reports the #Bengals expect head coach Marvin Lewis to return, there was no agreement after two Tuesday morning meetings.”

Just heard on the radio that the Vikings signed Rhett Bomar to a three year deal and promised him a shot at the starting job. I liked Bomar since he was at OU, but if accurate, that's a little crazy.

Who was saying that? It sounds a little misleading. They did sign him to a 3-year deal but you know how those deals work in the NFL, especially when you sign someone off a practice squad. Promising him a shot at the starting job isn't really saying much considering that there is no starter right now. It's Webb, Ramsey and Bomar. Ramsey will be gone so those are the only two QB's entering the draft and free agency.

They're going to draft someone to add to those two. If they bring in a veteran stop-gap that means you've got 4 and one of Webb or Bomar is gone after camp. If it comes to that situation I would bet it's Bomar who is out. Then again, maybe he and Webb and the rookie show enough that they're good going with those 3. I would be surprised though.

It was a local program that cited a source, but I didn't hear who. It may have been taken out of context or assuming, I don't know, but it sounds like it was wrong anyway.

Well, it's official soccer. Cable not returning to Oakland.

Now Al is free to hire an awesome coach, right?

When dew posted the following:

49ers requested permission to interview Raiders offensive coordinantor Hue Jackson for their head coach opening.

My first thought was that Cable would be fired quickly and Jackson named coach.

And guess what? That's exactly what happened.

2011 Strength of Schedule

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/35095/2011-strength-of-schedule

Bears have the easiest schedule in the division.

Technically, the Bears have the hardest schedule in the division. It's just that the other three teams have to play the Bears twice which makes their records inflated. And the Bears first place teams they have to play (Philadelphia and Seattle) didn't beat up on their divisions so their records aren't that much better than the teams the other teams in the division have to play.

I don't see that division suddenly getting easier either.

They're basically going to need to improve big time, or get slaughtered again.

Wow. Poor Carolina. Worst record and get the hardest schedule. Of course, having three 10-win teams in your division doesn't help.

Yeah...that and the worst team in a division is always going to appear to have the hardest schedule the next season, simply because they don't get to play themselves, and other teams beefed up their records against them.

Doesn't help that they get the NFC North also, and have to play the Bears and Packers. Add in the Colts in the AFC South and they have 9 games vs. teams that won 10 games this year.

They have a great shot at getting Luck next year if something crazy happens and he stays in college.

That might be a better scenario for them. If Luck stays in school, they could either trade the pick to try to recoup the second rounder they traded last year, or just take the top guy on their board, lose a bunch of games in 2011 and still end up with Luck for the future.
