This is why I hate the Rooney Rule.

It's not a good rule. There hasn't been anyone that benefited from this rule either, as every head coach that's been hired certainly was qualified with or without the rule in place. And in an instance like this, where Harbaugh is a high-profile "get", why you HAVE to interview anyone else seems redundant to me.

That said, the Fins know the rules and before pitching Harbaugh, they should have already made their "courtesy" interview. Of course, they also should have went ahead and fired their head coach before doing any of this stuff to begin with, so they get a big FAIL all around.

Tomlin?

Everything I've heard about that situation was that he really only did get the interview because of the rule. I really think they would have gone with one of the guys on staff (were Whisenhunt and Grimm still around then?) or somebody else because he kind of came out of nowhere.

so if the dolphins interview, say, a black janitor for the head coach position, can they then hire harbaugh?

I think they can walk out the front door, grab the first black man they see, interview him, and hence satisfy the rule. Certainly there would be backlash from something like that but I've never seen anything more than just "you need to interview one minority candidate."

No they can't. Has to be a qualified candidate that can be legitimately able to handle the job.

With as many teams as there are currently looking for a quarterback, I can definitely see one offering a trade to keep other teams out of the bidding. I don't know how much they'd get, but a trade is very doable, IMO.

The question isn't as much who needs a QB as it is who wants Vince. With as many questions as there are surrounding him and his age, most teams who need a QB will likely look to the draft or Philly first. Whether we can trade Vince or not depends largely on how much interest the Titans can generate (real or fabricated). If a team who likes him knows/thinks there's competition for him, they might be willing to deal. If it becomes pretty well known that VY isn't in great demand, then teams will wait for us to cut him.

Well that's a bit subjective now isn't it.

that's too bad. i was envisioning bringing in a homeless bum a la eddie murphy in trading places.

I've never seen Steven Ross, but if he looks like a younger version of Ralph Bellamy or Don Ameche, that'd be awesome.

correct. the rule is needed until blacks in head coaching positions mirrors the percentages among players. art shell was the first black head coach in the NFL, the first in how many years of existence? it ain't clearing up overnight.

you can't force white people to hire black people, but you can force them to have to listen for a second.

Has to be an NFL assistant or coordinator. Better? I assume the same would apply to a college coach in those same positions.

The rule applies to all minorities. Ron Rivera also applies.

They tried to interview Ted Williams but the Cavs beat them to the punch.

i'm just talking about the 2 predominant ethnicities in the nfl. not a ton of hispanics, not a ton of asians, more than a few pacific islanders, though.

but generally, it's a black and white league. if rivera were hired as an HC, that alone would probably more than satisfy the player percentage or whatever you want to call it.

La Canfora:

Stanford's proposal to keep Harbaugh eclipsed the 49ers offer including all bonuses. Stanford, MIA, SF and Denver all still in the hunt

One source with a pulse on the situation estimated it could still ultimately come down to the Bay Area entities - Stanford and the 49ers

No meeting sked with #Titans Coach Jeff Fisher and owner Bud Adams over next few days. Indications are decision will be next wk

I wish Bud would make a decision on Fisher.

the decision should be don't fire your coach unless you can bring in someone better. in the case of the titans, that's very unlikely.

According to Jay Glazer ,the Dolphins are going to stick with Sparano.

So much for the "done deal" reports for Harbaugh (again).

This is pretty much my stance. I just want to know what Bud's stance is.

The thing I never understood about the Harbaugh rumors was that Stanford wouldn't be able to match an NFL/bigger college program dollar for dollar. Maybe they don't allocate that kinda dough for a coach in the athletic budget but there are tons of Stanford alums with more money than God that would be willing to pony up the cash.

There was a report yesterday that Stanford could match or even exceed the offer that the 49ers had on the table for Harbaugh.

Of course, now Jay Glazer says that a deal with the 49ers could get done tonight for over $6 million per season.

In addition to interviewing McDaniels for OC, the Vikings are interviewing Singletary for LB coach.

The NFC North might have like 14 former head coaches next year.

Yes sir.

So I grab the nearest black man, hire him as assistant, then interview him for HC.

OK! I'm done now :)

Per Adam Schefter, Harbaugh is "expected to agree to a five-year contract with the 49ers." That man is going to be rich.

Harbaugh to the 49ers for 5 years according to Schefter.

You still have a week to come to your senses and realize what's going to happen to the 2011 Stanford football team, Andrew Luck.

And a lot of coaches looking for extensions are going to be expecting to get paid. Lovie Smith, for example.
