If it's Otto, I will never listen to a WGN broadcast ever again. On those days he filled in for Santo /went on the road with Pat, were PAINFUL I tell you. He is just incredibly boring and annoying, and I don't even know why. He just is.

Yeah if Moreland is available and wants the job I have no idea why this is even a discussion between he and Otto. Although they might want to keep Otto as the fill-in guy so acting like it was an agonizing decision and he was the runner-up might behoove them.

I don't really see the issue with Otto.....he isn't that bad.

He is tolerable for an occasional game, but if I have to listen to his Otto-isms all summer long I'm pretty sure I'll be beating my head on my desk at work.

Because Otto has a lot of other options?

So even if Otto is subsequently let go you still won't listen? Wow, that's a lot of angst over a radio color man decision.

If Otto is selected maybe it's just with the intent of being a caretaker for a year or so until Kerry Wood retires and takes over the spot.

That's what I think it would be.

If you don't want to make your permanent decision right now, bring in Otto for a little while.

Ron Santo being there was enough for me to not listen to Cubs games on WGN.

Better to be the guy that follows the guy that follows "the guy" than the guy that follows "the guy".

He has literally never had an opinion I agree with

Seriously?

I can't imagine it was that unpopular an opinion. I listened on the radio when I did because I had no other choice, but I never thought Ron was adding anything to the broadcast with his incoherent nonsense.

Is that ok to say?

Sure. It's definitely a bit of revisionist history with all of the people acting like they loved Ron's career as a broadcaster. There's nothing wrong with people separating their appreciation of Ron the player/Cubs fan/person and Ron the announcer. Personally, I got a kick out of listening to him from time to time, but more often than not I would find myself tuning out because he was just SO bad.

Yeah, we love Ron, but he certainly won't make the HOF as an announcer.

Ron was brutal. Loved the man, didn't care much for the broadcaster.

I didn't listen to the radio much, but if Otto gets the job that will drop to nil.

And he means any radio

Sadly, unless you count internet radio, that's pretty accurate.

Bernstein doesn't seem to acknowledge or realize that 95+% of analysts who try to add "insight" actually take away from the enjoyment of the broadcast because they are idiots. Give me an idiot trying to bring the feel of the game to me over an idiot trying to explain the game to me any day.

The show seemed to take place from a nursing home, with Pat sitting in a chair next to Ron’s adjustable bed, telling him what was going on in the game, and, I imagined, helping him open his mail and fold his clothes.

That's not going to go over well

It's hard to bring the feel of the game when you've spaced out for a few at-bats and your formerly awesome PbP guy has decided that riffing off you is better than calling the game.

Bernstein has long had a pretty vocal dislike for Santo. Anybody that would have been upset by Bernstein insulting Santo probably were upset about it long ago.
