It's easy to pretend to know more than the idiot managers when your "decisions" don't actually result in something happening and you can't be called out on them. Two things happened with Stone. One, all the kids that watched him and liked him in the 80's/90's grew up, and he became a bitter dick.

This.

Yes, mostly the latter. Cub fans would still have liked him after they realized there wasn't anything magical about his schtick. But then he insisted on being a turd. That was the end.

To be honest, if I had the 2004 he did, and the manager and players were more concerned with me than what was going on on the field and it made my job hell, I think I'd have taken potshots on the way out the door as well.

eh, i'm guessing stone is thin skinned and blew it way out of proportion. and if not, it seems like in retrospect he deserved the treatment anyways.

But he always knew when the slider low and away was coming...

So you guys are ripping on a color analyst for *gasp* analyzing a game? The nerve of that man to actually give some insight into a baseball game!

Predicting a slider low and away is not analyzing a game. He's not even right most of the time when he calls it.

I had some sympathy for Stone's plight in 2004, the problem is he tried acting like he was part of the team and needed management to take sides or something. He reacted as unprofessionally and whiningly as possible. Had he taken the high road he'd have come out looking much better. But he's a bitch and incapable of such actions.

Actually, I wasn't a big fan of his even when he was in his heyday with Harry. Every time he said "here's a lesson for all you youngsters out there", I wanted to throat punch him. Not really because he liked giving lessons to the youngsters, but he had this way of saying it that really said "I would never make such a boneheaded play, but let me point out how boneheaded so and so was on this particular play".

I remember being a youngster listening to all of those and completely ignoring them. Probably because I was an uncoachable prima donna but also because his lessons weren't even really lessons. It was just, don't make a mistake like this silly major league baseball player just made right here.

I think Steve Stone is great. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the game and was more of an analyst than the cheerleader Santo was on the radio. Ronnie was pretty bad as a color man. Many broadcasts he missed an inning or so, forcing Pat to go solo. He seldom did his homework and Pat would have to tell him who was in rightfield or what happened in the inning.

I'd like to see the Cubs put someone with Pat who has a great knowledge of baseball and brings a bit of an edge to the broadcast. But I'm afraid with the Ricketts it will be bland and vanilla.

If by "a great knowledge of baseball" you mean "the svengali-like ability to make pedestrian observations appear to be the revelations of an oracle", and by "an edge" you mean "haughty dickishness", then Stone is your guy. If, on the other hand, you prefer a baseball broadcast to be more enjoyably than jury duty, you probably want to look elsewhere.

I may get hammered for this but I think Grace would awesome. But he's burned too many bridges with the Cubs. I think he would be awesome because Pat would help him to be less of d-bag. I don't think Grace would take a step down to move from TV to the radio though. Suttcliffe would be about the worst choice I could possibly imagine, but I could see him taking the job.

He burned his bridges with MacPhail, if I recall. But I'm not sure the Cubs regime has any issues with him. Hendry was around, but he doesn't make marketing decisions.

If I wanted to hear stories about Mark Grace 3 hours a day, I'd go hang out with Barry Rozner.

I prefer Steve to such indepth analysis like "How did Rameriz get to second, Patrick?" or "I didn't actually see the play live, but if I watch the replay a few times...".

I'll tell you how Ramirez got to second Ronnie, VERY LAZILY

Grace would be a really good addition to the radio booth, but I'm guessing that he has established roots in Arizona these days.

I'm sure he's knocked up random cocktail waitresses in every MLB city, not sure what that has to do with anything though.

I don't know either, but that would be a damn impressive accomplishment.

I wasn't really referring to THAT kind of roots, but it's fun to think about anyway. Haha.

Count me as pro-Stoney (though my opinion of him has of course diminished) and anti-Gracey.

I assume this is all wild speculation. I don't expect Ricketts to spend much money to fill this job.
