i like pat's inning off because judd always asks keith some sort of horribly inane question ("what pitchers back in your day most enjoyed taking batting practice during rain delays") and keith spends like 5 pitches trying to come up with an answer before simply listing three names i've never heard before and giving no specific details whatsoever ("phil krupt, tommy plibt, and sammy dingus jr. also, with that grand slam i forgot to mention a moment ago, the cubs now lead 4-3").

I thought Cubs radio broadcasts would improve substantially with Santo gone, and maybe technically-speaking they have, but I don't find myself enjoying them quite as much. I find most of what Moreland says to be rather dull and, as someone else stated, unremarkable. For a radio station like WGN, in a large market with a huge following, I think they can do better. I just hope WGN is keeping their options open for when Moreland's contract expires and that it isn't a foregone conclusion that he will be extended. I can live with him, but still hope for something better.

Well, WGN is about as dull and unremarkable as you can get in the entertainment world so it would make sense that their broadcast has those qualities.

I think Moreland has improved, but Pat does not have the same chemistry with him. He set up Santo so perfectly.

I'm thinking Kieth is keeping Wood's seat until he retires.

I'm interested to see if Kerry Wood takes the seat next to Pat when Moreland's contract is up in a couple years.

According to Bruce Levine (so take it with a grain of salt), Wood has not expressed any interest in broadcasting.

Good. I'm pretty sure he would suck at it.

Why is that? Or I guess I should ask, why would he suck any worse than most color commentators?

He's kind of a meatball and probably wouldn't have much to say that I would enjoy hearing. I'd rather not hear him say a bunch of things that annoy me that would cause me to not like him as much as I do.

wow, i never really got a meatball vibe from wood at all. i'm sure i disagree with some of his views on baseball, but i do think he'd be a competent broadcaster with a good sense of humor.

How about the smashing Sosa's boom box thing?

I'm pretty sure Wood and Grace would be besties if they played together longer.

They were besties when they did play together.

Haha.

SSR, you're a pretty big fan of Grace, if I remember correctly.

I [expletive] love Sosa, but smashing his boom box was pretty awesome.

I mean, yeah, it's pretty meatball-y, but so was what Sosa pulled that day. The meatballiest thing, however, was how the organization played Mean Girls with the whole thing to make Sosa look as bad as possible.

Agreed.

Keith Moreland provided this nugget of wisdom on today's broadcast, in reference to Aroldis Chapman's velocity:

The ball's gettin' up on you 6 inches quicker.

Trying to make sense out of that statement is about enough to make my head explode, but it is just one of many complaints I have about Moreland. With this being the last year of his contract, I really hope the Cubs are keeping their options open. When he isn't saying something dumb, he is choking on his words, and when he does play-by-play in the 5th inning I have no idea what the hell is going on. I don't care that he played 6 seasons for the Cubs. There must be hundreds of guys who could do a better job, including Mark Grace whose options are now limited enough that he would probably accept a lower-paying radio job that he might not have taken before.
