Yeah, they were reporting on the MLB network that part of the deal is that the Cubs were signing him to a "personal services contract" after he retired. Still, he's a classy guy, a true Cub at heart, and I'm glad he's back.

I've read more than once in this thread that Wood was coming home to retire a Cub and now I'm reading "personal services contract" after he is retired. Is his arm at the end of the line now, or are we looking at getting wonderful deals year after year until he eventually does say enough is enough.

Basically, I'm curious what he has left in the tank since he's a few generations behind Jamie Moyer.

A "personal services contract" is what, exactly? He makes appearances at team-related functions on behalf of the Cubs? Interacting with fans at the Cubs convention and at any other events sponsored by the organization? Must be rough.

But still, glad he's back.

I'm sure the "personal services contract" was a gentleman's agreement because of the hometown discount.

I'm sure it is too, but it doesn't answer my question. I haven't followed Wood's career at all since he left Chicago. If he continues pitching relief, how many years do we think he might have left? Has he had setbacks with injuries the last few years, or is he healthy as a horse now. We know he's still relatively young, but how young is the arm now?

For some reason I was listening to Michael Kay's show yesterday and he couldn't comprehend how someone could sign for that little. He questioned why they Yankees didn't offer more and blow him away with an offer. When his co-host said Wood just wanted to go back to the Cubs, Kay shrugged it off as if loyalty didn't matter compared to money.

Just moments before that, he compared Cliff Lee to "the girl who rejects you so you hope she ends up with the fat, loser boyfriend that treats her badly."

You stay classy, Michael Kay.

That typlifies Yankee fans as a whole. They feel like it's their birthright to get whoever they want basically. If they miss out on someone, then they aren't any good anyway. Kay evidently has helped them along in attaining this type of attitude.

I'm not sure when the Cubs may have the chance to get their own network(I thought it was towards the end of this decade) but I hope at some point, we(and others too, for that matter) can at least compete somewhat with them monetarily in the future.

Yankees fans are bewildered that they havent been able to just buy anyone they want this winter. One of the more enjoyable subplots of the offseason so far.

Bernstein on the Score just now said that through people he knows in the organization, he heard a little more about how this went down.

When Wood was here for the funeral, he was amazed at the outpouring of support for a guy who was known to a ton of these people as only a broadcaster. Wood came back also as part of a long term plan and wants to be a "beloved Cub" in the long term and knowing that he's nearing the end of his career, and can be hurt on the next pitch he throws, has plans on becoming either a TV or radio guy for the Cubs whenever that time comes and has discussed it with the organization.

Not groundbreaking or anything, but sort of interesting.

Yeah, pretty much what all the "personal services" talk was eluding to.

I'm intrigued now. I want to hear how good Woody would be in the booth.

With our luck he'll be terrible and we'll grow to resent him, amirite?

His voice really isn't that compelling, and he really holds in a lot of excitement so I am not really sure he will be a good tv/radio guy. I would love for him to become one, but its hard to picture that.

On the four days when he's not starting, Ryan Dempster should definitely be in the booth.

no .........

Basically, I'm curious what he has left in the tank since he's a few generations behind Jamie Moyer.

He's on fumes. I wouldn't be shocked if he didn't make it out of ST. I think last year was his swan song.

A personal service contract? Sounds very whorish to me. I like it.

Yeaa................. being completely dominate in almost 30 innings to end the season means he is washed up and can provide nothing...

The only way this makes sense is if the "He's on fumes..." was referring to Jamie Moyer. And the contract comment was about Kerry.

My favorite part of the response was that I asked that question nearly a month ago.
