I wonder if he thought Grabow wasn't on the team anymore, or if he was just taking it from him. Haha good stuff.

Being a Cubs fan sucks. Having a player like Kerry represent us make me feel better about it.

Don't bother me with details like whether or not this will actually make a difference.

I'm happy to see Woody back :)

This is a nice little bit of news for a Friday afternoon/evening.

And according to the Tribune story, it seems like Kerry pretty much flat out asked Jim to sign him at Ron's funeral and/or Dempster's charity thing.

"We threw it out there for Jim that one night (at D'Agostino's)," Wood said. "And he was honest with me from Day 1, (saying) 'If this isn't a possibility, we're not going to go down this road. Obviously we can't compete (with other offers).' I said 'I'm not really asking you to at this point.'"

Mmmmm...D'Agostino's.

I used to live a few blocks away from D'Agostino's. Good pizza. Among other things. It seems oddly fitting that Woody should offer a sweetheart deal to return to the Cubs in such a Wrigleyville family favorite.

I feel bad that Kerry doesn't have more money. He's now signed two garbage deals for this terrible team.

You know, I'm pretty sure if Kerry gets himself a good investment banker or something he'll never want for anything again. I very much doubt he'll have to take a job in the offseason just to make ends meet.

Man what an emotional rollercoaster this week has been for true Cubs fans, we lose our biggest fan, and we regain the player that most of us consider our favorite. I will admit bringing Wood back is a huge emotional lift for the Cubs, even for a questionable team I cannot wait to watch.

Kerry is the man, i hope that when I have kids they can latch on to someone who is not only a good player but the type of person Kerry is. Fantastic day to be a Cubs fan.

Man, now I'm starving. That place is fantastic.

I've lived within 2 blocks of D'Agostino's for the last 4 years and have never eaten there. What is wrong with me?

You better have been eating Red Ivy instead

Oh, la-dee-da.

Among others. I [expletive] love Red Ivy. It's worth the outrageous prices.

I'll make it a point to head over to D'Agostino's sometime soon.

Worth noting if it hasn't already. Though, most of us knew Kerry took less to return home.

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman tweets:

"wood's $1.5 mil cubs guarantee isnt close to #yanks, #redsox bids. nyy would have bid $10 mil for 2 if he was interested"

Turning down $8.5MM in guaranteed money to return home is most definitely a "hometown discount."

Thank you, Kerry, and welcome back. You've been missed.

I've always been a big fan, but Kerry has moved way up my list of all-time favorite Cubs as a result of this. You just don't see this kind of loyalty to a team. If it was just about being in Chicago, he could have signed with the Sox for over twice as much.

Not to be too cynical but it's pretty clear that was his intention by doing this. It was an investment in his future. If he never came back he would be a much loved former Cub. Now he's got a chance of living the lifetime icon dream, which is what I'm sure he and Ricketts talked about. We will be seeing a lot of Wood the next 30 years.

Yep. Definitely a feel good story. Hopefully he has a great booth voice.

She would appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm sure the love shown for Santo by the people of Chicago helped persuade him that there's something special about being a Cub hero for life. His career numbers may not put him up there with Banks, Santo, Williams, Jenkins, and Maddux, but the people love him.

Nothing. D'Agostino's is overpriced crap. So many better pizza places.
