Now that the Red Sox trade has fallen through, the Cubs are looking to try and restart talks with the Padres, which previously didn’t get very far – according to the source – because of the Cubs’ reticence to deal Andrew Cashner, Tyler Colvin, Chris Archer, Brett Jackson, Hak-Ju Lee or Trey McNutt.

HAHA this better not be true. There should be no hesitance in doing any deal involving Colvin for a much better well established player. Colvin is far far far from being someone Hendry is scared to deal. Come on

Honestly, Cashner and Archer are the only ones Id refuse to move, and we might end up having to give up one of the 2.

Im probably one of the very few Colvin fans still out there, but if Hendry refuses to move him to get A Gon, he should be smothered.

I'd resist trading Archer or Jackson, but I'd trade any of the others in a heartbeat. If Cashner is just going to be a setup man for us anyways, might as well trade him now

Sounds like according to Levine the Cubs are tossing around the idea of putting Cash in the rotation next season.

Would anyone be opposed to using Soto in a deal? It would help financially some and we could keep our blue chip guys. Maybe something like Soto and 2-3 guys like DJL, Guyer, Dolis, Mateo. Obviously we would need to find a replacement for Soto, Koye won't get it done.

Definitely would not include Soto, he is one of the best offensive catchers in the game, do not create a hole to fill a hole and besides if you lose out on AG there is still a chance you can upgrade @ 1B after this season. The Cubs need to lock up Soto long term soon.

There is zero sense to using Soto in any Gonzalez deal. You have to minimize the player cost as much as possible because there's no way to leverage player cost into a better contract in the extension.

UPDATE: It looks like Cashner and Colvin are now being made available. The Cubs are still very reluctant to move Jackson, McNutt, Archer, and Lee (in that general order

Deal is done and he is being traded to the Red Sox, per Heyman.

Deal is done. A gon headed to #redsox. Press conf expected tomorrow

I'll just do what I usually do in these situations: wait for the point where he's wearing the team jersey & hat and talking about how he's looking forward to the season and yada yada.

Weird...so the trade fall apart, then the Cubs actually got back into the discussions and sorta made headway, but now Boston just sealed the deal and its over.

Exactly. Sounds like the Cubs' pursuit was at least part of the reason the Red Sox decided to do the deal (presumably without the extension in place).

Which sucks.

Okay so now send Colvin, Cashner, Castillo and prospect(s) for Greinke and 1 of Butler or Gordon.

Gonzalez is going to get a 8/167 extension, but it's essentially 7/161 as it begins this year and he makes 6 mil. Something to do with the luxury tax.

Rosenthal's latest was that the teams were between 5/120 and 6/150.

San Diego is officially going to have the worst offense in baseball.

Cubs are looking like a strong 29th right now.

Seattle will be up there also.

It was a nice though to entertain while it lasted. Oh well, back to our reality of a sucky team with little to no likelyhood of improving in the near future.

After the Werth signing he might get 12/210.

#Padres were particularly intrigued by #Cubs prospects - though wouldn't include Starlin Castro - but Hoyer/McLeod comfort knowing Redsox prospects, esp makeup, from days as Bos execs brought greater comfort to do deal with Bos
