they should just win the rest of their games and we won't have to worry about anything

Yeah, I'm up for winning 7 more in a row.

but i reiterate, there are few quarterbacks in the nfl that could run this offense with this line and maintain this kind of success.

If by few you mean 10. :D

mark sanchez being one?

Maybe, maybe not.

Yes Cutler has a lot of escapability and you need that with this line. But his decision making and mechanics are so far below the QBs like Manning, Brees, Rodgers, and Brady that his escapability in the end can't really make up for his negatives. That is why I don't believe that he and Vick and Rodgers are the only ones who could prosper in this offense. With that said if the line plays even close to average, Jay can excel and be a top 10, maybe even top 7 QB. He can win the Super Bowl this year with a decent line considering there aren't really any juggernaut teams.

It doesn't matter how good your mechanics or decision making are when you're on your butt because you couldn't get away from the rush. Now, Jay does make some curious in-pocket decisions on occasion, namely the fumble and the other sack in the 3rd quarter today, but most of these other guys you're talking about don't make the plays Jay can with his feet like the scramble where Suh hit him or the other one where he nearly lost his head from that attempted hit by Delmas.

I just think the Bears D took the Lions too lightly with a 3rd string QB in there. Again, I thought the offense was strong the whole game. Defense got their heads out of their butts at half, and we won the game. I honestly never felt like we were in danger of losing it. Told my wife that at the half.

And it doesn't matter how great your escapability is when you throw of your back foot and make terrible decisions at times when you are not under pressure. Brady, Brees, and Manning will get sacked more than Jay does in this offense. But they will make up for it with better mechanics and better decision making skills.

Cutler's arm is strong enough for him to get away with throwing off of his back foot. He's made clutch throws time and time again doing so.

He gets into trouble when he tries to force throws.

I don't read much of the Bears game threads, but you stand out quite a bit with your hatred of Cutler. I wonder if you're doing it because you actually think Cutler is bad or you enjoy arguing with the rest of the board week in and week out.

Posted

I think it's both.

Throwing off your back foot is generally considered bad and has ruined many a qb (rex grossman). However some have made their careers having success throwing off their back foot. Cutler is one. He makes his share of bad throws from that position but he's also made many more awesome throws

I don't hate Cutler, but I do enjoy a good argument if I think I am right as most posters here do. I have the same opinion of Cutler as I do with Luol Deng. They have fantastic ability, but are too inconsistent. I am hard on Cutler because I think he can play more consistent and has the tools to be a perennial Pro Bowler and I want to see that. What I say is not too different from any major commentator. The Bears are a good to great team, but you need more consistent QB play. People don't trust the Bears totally yet, but they are beginning to beacuse Jay is playing like the QB he should have been all along. I have no complaints with Jay the last five games. They can beat anyone with this defense and Jay not turning the ball over. Granted the line has stabilized too (by which i mean they aren't getting Jay absolutely killed every game) which is obviously crucial.

Yes Jay can make great throws off his back foot, but why do it? No QB has to do it and you will be a better QB for not doing it. No pitcher has to throw across his body. It doesn't help you make a pitch. I think it is the same with throwing off your back foot. It just takes too much off the ball.

Bucs tie the Falcons at 14 before the half. I'm going to be pissed if we go 0 for 4 in games that would help us. If we can get TB out of the WC picture, I feel pretty good considering the Giants have yet to play both the Eagles and Packers. That's two games in which we are guaranteed to get a favorable outcome.

So go Falcons.

We were down by 6 in the 3rd quarter, so by definition we were in danger of losing it.

By definition? What's the definition you're using? I never felt like we were in danger of losing it. Are you trying to argue that I didn't feel that way?

throwing of his back foot didn't ruin rex, it was the fact that he had no composure in the pocket and no awareness instincts. oh, and he couldn't move at all, if you're small, you better be able to run.

The definition is that if the game ended, we would have a lower score than our opponents. I wasn't attempting to argue what you felt, but the fact is, we were behind.

you seriously think that quarterbacks never benefit from being able to throw off their back foot?

yeah, i want a guy who has to wind up and shawon dunston it to get a throw off.

We were never more than one score behind. The way that the offense played all game, I felt like we could get a TD when we needed it.

Of course we were behind. But I never felt there was a danger that that would be the case at the end of the game, which, by definition, is when it matters.

They can benefit from throwing off their back foot when they are under pressure and can't step up, but Jay has made a habit of doing it when he doesn't have to. Jay doesn't have to wind up like Shawn Dunston. Just take a step or two forward like normal QBs do. Why is that so much to ask?

I wish people would get it out of their heads that a QB has to display perfect form on his throws or he isn't good.

There are a wide variety of methods in the NFL for success -- especially at the QB position.

the best qbs can throw it any way they want to throw it.

because sometimes taking a step forward means getting clobbered. why is that so hard to understand?

he rarely throws off his back foot unless it is imperative.

Well of course I don't want him to step up if he is going to get clobbered. Did you really think I meant that? I think jay throws off his back foot a lot more that when it is imperative.

Arm motion is one thing, but throwing off your back foot is another. I don't think Jay has an enormous problem with it. He is just so used to doing it beacuse he is under pressure that he seems to be doing it when it isn't necessary. He just has a couple of things that he needs to work on to get to the net level.

If he can maintain the kind of low-turnover consistency he has shown the past several games, I don't see why it matters.

He's proven that he *can* do it. So if he does it, then his passing form is not really an issue. Any more than it would be with other non-traditional, successful QBs.

It's not the source of trouble. Decision-making consistency is where the focus should be.
