I can't explain it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the 1997 National Title run.

OK, this is what happened. This is how I became a Michigan sports fan. It doesn't exactly paint me in a good light as a Michigan fan. Until 1995, I never followed college sports at all. Then, being a 13 year old kid who loved his local sports teams, became enamoured with the 95 Northwestern Rose Bowl team. I mean how could you not like that story. The next year in 96, I followed Northwestern again to start the year. Midyear, my dad took a friend and I to the Michigan Northwestern game in 96. A year prior, my mom took my shopping at Woodfield and took me into champs sports and for some reason I picked out a Michigan jersey, because I thought the maize and blue colors were cool. I knew it was a Michigan jersey but I definitely didn't buy it because of that. The jersey was of #12 Mr. Scott Dreisbach. I didn't think much of it until the opportunity to goto the NW/UM game came up. At that point I thought "awesome I have a jersey for one of these teams, I'm gonna wear it to the game". So I wore it and celebrated proudly when Michigan stormed out to a 19-0 lead going into the 4th. Of course NW scored 20 in the 4th and won with a last second FG, but I didn't care.

So my seeds for Michigan were planted. That year I decided to follow Michigan basketball too. And they started out great that year. They were even #4 in the nation at one point. But they started sucking, as the next fab 5 tended to do, and ended up blowing all chances of making the NCAA Tourney, unless they won their last game against inferior OSU. I was devistated when OSU went on a run late to take a 4-5 point lead with under a minute left. Upset, I gave up and went outside to my driveway hoop to pretend like I was leading a comeback. And while that was going on, they did comeback and win. They actually didn't make the Tourney that year, but I watched them all next year after the 97 Michigan football team did their thing. The 97 bball team won the inagural Big 10 tourney, had a 3 seed in the tourney, and I was officially hooked...completely unaware that their 2nd round flameout to UCLA that year would be their last appearance in the tourney until 2 years ago.

I don't know why I typed all that out but there it is.

Edit: And screw you SSR, actually winning the NIT in 1996 was a huge part of why I became a Michigan fan. I was so upset they got snubbed to the big dance, I thought winning the NIT would show those [expletive] they made a mistake, as every single NIT winner has felt.

I can't let such an egregious Northwestern history error go uncorrected. Michigan was up 16-0 in that game and Northwestern scored 17 in the 4th quarter (TD, 2 point conversion, FG, FG, FG) thanks to a big 4th down catch by Musso to set up the infamous double game-winning FG by Gowins.

A game that I, too, attended as a kid.

No one actually called that group of players the next Fab 5 did they?

I do actually think that someone at some point did because I'm not clever enough to think something like that up. I know that Ward, Taylor and Baston came in one year (while Jimmy King and Ray Jackson were still on the team) while Bullock and Traylor were the next year, so it can't be considered an incoming class of 5 players.

Sorry, I was just going off memory. Anyways, I didn't completely drop Northwestern. They've remained my (clearly distant) 2nd favorite college football team.

UM, I have always been kind of the other way with MSU. I have never gotten into BB that much even though MSU has one of the elite programs in the country. Their FB team is mediocre at best but I follow that much more closely. I think it has always had something to do with my trying to make my dad angry:)

I've always been a closet ND fan.

USC and ND?

I was an ND fan until I went to school at USC and I never turned the switch on Notre Dame. There's not a lot enmity in the rivalry anyhow.

Although now that Davie, Ty, and Weis have laid waste to the program I find them more comic than likable. But yeah, I root for them.

Well, expletive an expletiving expletive in the expletiving expletive. Greg Childs is out for the year, AND Joe Adams is still questionable for this weekend after missing last week's game. Expletive.

That's about the same reason I'm both an Indiana and Kentucky fan, and I've been made fun of on this board at times for it. I grew up an IU fan, and when I went to UK for grad school I had been an IU fan for too long to turn on them.

I always like to look who everyone voted for.

Wisconsin did not play this week and moved Wisconsin down 3 spots in his voting to number 16th.

Stanford I get after winning 41-0. Iowa I sort of get (though I don't agree with him), since he seems to give them a lot of credit for destroying Michigan State. At least those two I can understand the thought process.

But LSU is the confusing one. LSU had a bye week also and while he dropped them down one spot, he moved them ahead of Wisconsin.

He has Mizzou 7th and Nebraska 10th.

Ohio State sixth, Wisconsin 16th.

NCSt 22nd, Virginia Tech 25th. Va Tech won at NC State 41-30 on Oct. 2.

This is where we need to be able to elect voters and have done banned. I'm not a fan of the computer systems but they are blind and do a better job than him.

Actually, I got a pamphlet from USC my senior year of high school and since I wanted to do broadcasting really considered applying. When I found out how expensive it was I never did but I always wondered what it would've been like to go there.

ward, taylor, baston, willie mitchell, and travis conlan.

but according to rankings, it was every bit the class the fab 5 was. ward was the #1 player in that class.

A win would be really nice for Tennessee. I expect Tyler Bray to play quite a bit, but I still think Simms will start. If we play like we did against South Carolina and LSU, we should win easily. Memphis is bad.

Need to go 4-0 for a bowl game.

Bray was named the starter today (which I'm glad for, since Simms has been such a whiny punk the past two games), and I don't think Tennessee gets a Bowl Game even if they get to 6-6.

I am just guessing, but I think the SEC shakes out like this:

Bama: MNC Game

Auburn: Sugar

South Carolina: Outback

LSU: Capital One

Arkansas: Cotton

Florida: Gator

Miss. State: Chick-Fil-A

Georgia: Music City

It's possible that a 6-6 Tennessee gets into the Liberty or Papa John's, but I'd be surprised.

Out of all those SEC teams, the only matchup that scares me as an Iowa fan is against LSU. Even that game we can win.

I would love for Auburn to lose the SEC champ game and fall to us in the Rose/Cap One bowl. I think it would get ugly for them.

Newton would wear the Iowa linebackers like a hat as he scored 5 TDs, like he does to every other team in the country.

Yeah, Iowa matches up well against AU...they would definitely be able to score a large number of points on the AU defense. Even with Iowa having a strong D, the AU offensive line, WRs, and RBs make the Auburn O quite versatile. Newton is a very accurate whem making short and intermediate length passes...he just hasn't shown the ability to consistently throw the deep ball. How is the Iowa offensive line at pass blocking? Auburn is pretty good at getting to the QB. They're also good against the run. I think it would probably be a closely contested, relatively high scoring game.
