How can there be defensive holding on a running play?

Very easily

obviously, but how? Defensive players are allowed to grab offensive players with the exception being receivers on a pass play are they not?

You're not allowed to grab and hold potential blockers to keep them from getting involved in the play.

Second best game of the season for Tennessee yesterday. Outside of the LSU game, this is the first time we've had a legitimate chance to beat an SEC team. I'm starting to think Matt Simms may be on his way out as starting QB shortly as well. I think some of his sacks are him holding the ball too long and he's not enough of a playmaker to pull the Ben Roethlisberger stuff. Tyler Bray played fairly significant snaps and, outside of a pick six on his second throw, looked solid. He made a pair of terrific touchdown throws in between defenders. I just worry about his well-being if he becomes the starter. The line is better, but not that much.

We need to sweep November now to make a bowl game. Vanderbilt and Memphis really should be wins and the key is going to be whether we can beat Kentucky and Ole Miss. I doubt we beat both, but it's possible.

And Alshon Jeffery is going to be one of the best receivers in the nation within the next couple of years. That was a big miss for the Kiffin staff.

He already is.

You're probably right.

How in the hell did Michigan give up over 480 yards to Penn State and a backup, walk-on QB? How has it gotten this bad?

on the flip side, how did Penn State's anemic offense and terrible O-Line win a shootout with Michigan? I didn't see a single snap of the game

That's easy. They ran 35 counter plays that Michigan got faked out on every time. Then they ran 15 rollout passes that saw every Penn State receiver open by 15 yards. Your walk-on QB had over 250 yards passing.

I'm recording ESPNU's replay tonight. I'll be interested to see if PSU can build on this

The BCS makes a lot of sense. Missouri goes from No. 6 to No. 12 and Oklahoma somehow leapfrogs them.

when you lose is more important then who you lose too

And where you start in the polls makes a huge difference.

The teams who started 1 and 2 in the polls not coincidentally are the two teams that the polls rank a lot better than the computers do:

Alabama: 5th in polls, 15th in computers

Ohio State: 8th in polls, 16th in computers

Meanwhile Missouri, Nebraska, LSU, Michigan State, and Oklahoma State are all seen as much better by the the computers than the polls. Missouri in particular still sticks out as they are 4th in the computers and average out to be 14.5 in the polls.

It also appears that for one of Boise/TCU/Utah to make the title game, they just need one of the following 3 things to happen (along with going undefeated):

Oregon to lose

Auburn to lose against somebody other than Alabama

Alabama to lose against somebody other than Auburn

Oklahoma has a small shot to overtake an undefeated Boise/TCU/Utah and I guess LSU would too especially if they found a way into the SEC title game. But both of those teams would need significant help (Ohio State and Wisconsin losses would help them move up in the polls for example). But mostly it's the undefeateds and Alabama right now and the others probably won't be considered until those start falling off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the only one of those that happens is alabama losing to someone other than Auburn, then the mids are still screwed.

Ah, you mean to imply that in that third case that Alabama would beat Auburn and yet lose to someone else. Gotcha.

If TCU can get a convincing win this weekend that will hopefully go a long way. If Alabama jumps an undefeated Boise St., TCU, or Utah I hope the BCS dies a painfull death.

The BCS going away (and being replaced with a playoff) would be a good thing anyway. But yes, an unbeaten Boise really should go in over Bama - I think Boise's better.

our defense had absolutely no answer for their chop blocks or screens, it was the dumbest [expletive] ever

i want to like Rich Rod, and i still do, but the defense is such an abomination it's hard to have faith that he'll ever be able to fortify it

Build on what, destroying one of the worst defenses in Division 1?

It looks like Purdue is Michigan's only hope for getting bowl eligable. (which I predicted when we were 5-0 ;))

That these two things had to be written (and I'm not disagreeing) says everything anyone needs to know about how stupid the BCS is.

At least you just need to beat Purdue. ND would have to beat Army and at least one of USC and Utah to get to play in the GoDaddy.com Motor City Bowl of Living Hell or some such crappiness.

As a Michigan fan, I don't care what bowl Michigan would play in if they do win another game and become bowl eligible. Those extra practices are invaluable to a young team like Michigan. I'd gladly watch Michigan play in the Motor City Bowl.

If the Big Ten gets 2 BCS bids, there likely won't be any Big Ten team going to Detroit unless Indiana or Purdue pick up 2 more wins. With 2 BCS bids, the lowest bowl would be the Dallas Football Classic (New Years Day on ESPNU).

It's not really realistic for PSU, UM, and one of IU or Purdue to get to 6 wins.
