gene wojciechowski is doing gene wojciechowski things again

i love how he's been on the ryno-for-manager bandwagon forever, and the whole time his only reaosning is that he's a former cubs great and it's good for the fans. he never talks about the actual baseball impact.

Also, you could take those first couple paragraphs and it could say the same thing about Sandberg.

I really hate Wojo some times.

So basically he should be hired because he is Ryne Sandberg and Mike Quade isn't?

there is no being "right" on this debate.

if you think quade deserves the job because he managed sam fuld and scott maine past a variety of other teams' AAA squads during a 35 game window, you're wrong. if you think sandberg should be the manager because of that time he hit two homeruns against bruce sutter, you're also wrong.

I think the manager is the least of the Cubs' concerns heading into the offseason, so as long as they didn't hire a guy who will actively destroy the team, then yay.

Is Cashner still one pitch away from being a starter?

As I remember, his changeup was supposedly good, but not great, when he was starting. It was mostly a matter of getting him reps, learning how and when to use it, etc. more than anything mechanical. What was worrisome about his move to the bullpen is that it seemed like his stuff had taken a step back from where it was in the minors. Hopefully he gets all of that ironed out next year, regardless of whether he's starting or in relief.

Will he feel slighted that he didn't get the job and move elsewhere, forever burning a bridge with the team he played for and has been associated with for nearly 30 years?

That's exactly the kind of mewling, obsessive [expletive] that I'm sure gives Ryno a gigantic, balding boner. If he's actually going to burn bridges over this and think that he was "owed" this job right now, then [expletive] him.

Couldn't agree more

You think Sandberg wants to ride a bus all day? He has better things to do. If Hendry wanted him to manage in the minors first to get experience, then he better be serious about giving him a shot at the majors when Sandberg does what he's asked.

Yeah, he's got better things to do. If he hadn't so generously been a manager in their minor league system then he could have just jumped to being a manager for an MLB team right away, no problem.

He said he'd consider him for the job if he went to the minors. Sandberg went to the minors, and was considered.

I'm sure Mike Quade had better things to do then toil as a minor league manager and MLB assistant for the better part of two decades.

Not really, I shouldn't really have to. Half a year in the bullpen doesn't ruin a career as a starting pitcher.

An 80+ inning increase in workload sure does, though.

I wanted Cashner starting as much as anybody, but to say that putting him in the pen this year ruins his career assumes that a series of bad decisions are made with Cashner that haven't been made yet. It's not quite fair.

I agree with you, but keep in mind who we're talking about. I fully expect them to make those bad decisions.

To play devil's advocate here(and I really want Cashner to have a shot at starting) but the fact the Cubs have Archer, McNutt, Jay Jackson, Dolis, Carpenter, and Coleman all at least in the mix within the next 2 seasons(and it's doubtful we'll ever have more than 1 or 2 rookies in the rotation if you ask me), isn't it possible that maybe they're just figuring he's the best equipped for the pen out of those guys and maybe one or two of those guys have the talent to be better than Cashner as a starter and are just giving him a head start on his future role at the back of the pen?

I finally got around to looking up some stats for the season. Who the hell is Scott Maine? He had some decent numbers in limited appearances.
He's one of the players the Cubs got from Arizona last offseason in the Aaron Heilman trade.

oh man, ryno getting so pissed that he leaves the organization would be a dream scenario

The guy was one of the greatest Cubs ever, has been managing in the minors for a few years now because he really wanted to manage the Cubs, and now (at least so far) is handling not getting the job with a lot of class. I hate him so much.
