Florida just slightly increased their odds of adding another arrest this year by reinstating Rainey.

I guess Meyer didn't feel that the current roster was enough to catch Georgia.

What was it that Stalin said about arrests in the SEC?

Wow, Penn State's S&C program really is a complete joke if that list of exercises is accurate.

That is worse than any high school program I've ever seen.

I can't believe that's true. In this day and age, I'd find it hard to believe there are HS football teams that don't squat nor college programs that don't do Olympic lifts.

How does somebody complain about no squats and then say he never did any squats while at school when all he had to do was do a squat if that's what he wanted?

PSU was a pretty damn good program the past 4 years or so. That doesn't add up.

I dunno about that, Boise's 'quality' win doesn't look any better than OSU's defeat of Miami and its a toss up between Oregon and OSU there (and i hate to go and look at last years scores but OSU did go to Pac10 territory and beat them soundly last year)

Oregon has the best singular win so far (3 scores over Stanford) but they don't really have another impressive win and they struggled to beat Tennessee and Washington State in the first half - two really bad teams. Ohio State's win over Miami is nice and comparable to anything Boise has done, but they struggled mightily with Illinois and have played cupcakes otherwise.

Boise has two solid wins - Va Tech and Oregon State - and have mercilessly beaten everybody else they've played - all cupcakes, however. I'd give the edge to Boise because of the second solid win, but I don't think there's a significant difference.

Funny how losing 2 games in a row changed his mind about the severity of Rainey's actions.

plus it's all coming from some coach's wife at a tailgate? i suspect that most coach's wives have a little more discipline than to just spout off every problem with the program.

this same [expletive] happened in the early 2000s when PSU was bad or mediocre most years; everyone said paterno didn't know what was going on, there was no discipline, in-fighting, etc. then the program got good for a few years and all of a sudden the rumors went away.

MSU's Chris Rucker is heading to jail after a DUI while already being on probation for taking part in the group assault of MSU students last year. He's expected back on the team after being suspended for at least a game.

dang it....being 6-0 makes people care if you have players doing criminal type stuff.

As an expert in this, all it takes is getting a S&C coach who doesn't know what he's doing to ruin quite a bit of a program these days. Take the Front 7 from any of the top 15 teams from last year and add up their weights. Now look at the order from highest to lowest weight, and it has a miraculous correlation to their overall defensive rank.

FSU was a big loser in that regard as well. We hired someone as our S&C coach who was an ex-player (and a pretty good one) to get around the "no coaches" rule during summer workouts. The problem was that he didn't have players training effectively, and when combined with a poor nutrition program, the players were getting smaller compared to the teams they were playing. Now that Bobby is gone, we brought in a S&C coach who knows what he's doing, have a nutritionist who knows what he's doing, and have a bigger Front 7 - and we're winning more games. Don't underrate the S&C aspect - it's the foundation for the program.

Additionally, the last time that there was a groundswell that JoePa should go, he had the good sense to bring in a new Offensive Coordinator. This brought new life to a program, recruiting improved, and PSU was rejuvenated. We had a half-assed attempt at that, but instead of giving the power to the guy who could have done some good things (Jimbo, as he's doing now) he was relegated to 4th in the pecking order. The question is whether this is just a set of growing pains, or if it's something bigger - and you don't normally know it's something bigger until it's too late.

I'm glad that we made the change, and that a Board Member sacrificed himself for the good of the program and the university. We're winning, donations have increased, ticket sales are back up, and there is excitement around the program again. It was good, but it took someone with a HUGE set to pull it off.

I'd like to see the numbers on this. You're obviously correct on your point of the importance of a S&C program, but I'm not sure that I buy raw weight of a front 7 as such a huge factor.

I had to search for where I had read it, but here's what I found:

The 12 best defenses (have only gone through #12), with their front-7 weights

1 Alabama 1911

2 Oklahoma 1791

3 Iowa 1821

4 Nebraska 1795

5 OHST 1784

6 TCU 1781

7 Florida 1883

8 Penn State 1818

9 UNC 1855

10 Texas 1807

11 Boise State 1808

12 LSU 1868

18 of 20 top 20 defenses had a front 7 over 1780 lbs.

16 of 20 top 20 defenses had a front 7 over 1785 lbs.

15 of 20 top 20 defenses had a front 7 over 1790 lbs.

13 of 20 top 20 defenses had a front 7 over 1795 lbs.

11 of 20 top 20 defenses had a front 7 over 1800 lbs.

hmmm i see psu is on the list. i guess our guys are just morbidly obese while other teams' players are physical specimens.

FYI, that was from last year.

I haven't looked it up, but what did you lose from last year and what have they replaced it with? Also, did your S&C coach change recently? It's about a 3 year slide before the results are felt ...

Look up the Cam Maybin before/after pics. That should have occurred in college.

yeah instead he just dominated college OT's and got drafted in the first half of the first round.

FO's S&P+ ratings for this week (essentially the OPS of college football efficiency):

1 Ohio State 6-0 311.6

2 Alabama 5-1 275.3

3 Miami-FL 3-2 272.3

4 South Carolina 4-1 266.4

5 Nebraska 5-0 266.2

6 Boise State 5-0 264.6

7 Arizona 4-1 262.9

8 California 3-2 257.8

9 Auburn 6-0 255.6

10 Illinois 3-2 254.5

11 Missouri 5-0 254.3

12 TCU 6-0 252.6

13 Oregon State 3-2 251.7

14 LSU 6-0 250.8

15 Virginia Tech 4-2 248.9

16 Iowa 4-1 246.6

17 Florida State 5-1 246.1

18 Michigan State 6-0 244.9

19 Stanford 5-1 244.5

20 Oklahoma 5-0 243.5

21 Florida 4-2 239.2

22 Notre Dame 3-3 237.6

23 Arkansas 4-1 236.1

24 Utah 5-0 234.0

25 USC 4-2 230.5

Keep in mind, this is purely based on efficiency and opponent efficiency (and is a straight sum of offense + defense), so it's completely objective. Also keep in mind, that Ohio State's opponent efficiency looks really good right now.

EDIT: The entire FBS is rated here.

Also keep in mind that Miami lost to FSU by about 84 points

In a game where yardage was basically even while the game was close. S&P calculates efficiency based on success per play, which was surprisingly even.

Agreed. But how much better could he have been had he been properly trained?
