Is it weird or too forward thinking of me to think we should sign him to a team friendly Evan Longoria-type deal now and lock up some of his free agency years (He'll be like 26 when he gets his first free agent deal, whoa)

Hrmm..... interesting idea, but there are so many things that can go wrong between now and then, I think we'd be better holding off a few years and signing him to an extention later.

I would give him 2 years before that. Those are moves that a team like Tampa has to make.

I was one of the only people who thought that Castro should have been brought up early this season. It looks like that was a good move by Hendry. Anyone feel differently?

bad move. he should still be in AA or AAA. seriously, what kind of question in that now? knowing what we know now, i don't think you'll find too many criticizing Hendry for calling up Castro.

I felt like whatever we did as long as he got consistent at bats it was fine. Basically even if he was hitting <.250 but still getting a chance to work stuff out he'd be ok, but its not like his development is far from over. I would not be surprised to see his struggle more in the next few years especially if he has some BABIP problems.

As long as we don't tug him around and bench him and overall treat him like a piece of meat like we did with Felix Pie and we'll be OK.

I'm still not a big fan of the move. If Castro develops as he is supposed to, the Cubs cost themselves 7-10 million dollars by bringing him up one month early. That's a tough pill to swallow especially when knowing the 1 month they sacrificed it for came in a meaningless season. I don't think Castro should have been held down for development reasons but the financial difference was too much to ignore.

I was against it, but the fact that it facilitated the move of Theriot makes me more than willing to deal with the longer term ramifications.

Maybe. If he were called up a month later, he still would have lead to a Theriot trade if he played this well. The Cubs didn't know at the time that Castro was going to be called up early for a hopeless team in a throw-away season, but man it would have been nice if they had.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that since Theriot is gone, I'm willing to pretend those drawbacks don't exist.

can't argue with that mindset

You don't know that. There's not specific date that indicates when a player needs to come up to avoid becoming a super 2 down the line and starting the arbitration clock early. It involves MLB service time relative to Castro's peers (meaning the other rookies from this year). There was an inordinate amount of rookies to start the year, so I tend to believe he won't be a super 2 for the 2012 season.

An argument can be made that the Cubs could save about 7-10m if they signed him to a long term contract right before he starts to become more expensive.

Something along the lines of the Grady Sizemore contract, which is basically 7/32m.

ETA: Whoops. Just read back through the thread a bit and noticed others have already made a similar suggestion using Longoria and Braun as examples.

I was originally opposed to bringing him up with the line of thinking that Lou wouldnt' play him regularly or the team would bounce him around. Since the team sucks, the risk of benching is minimalized and this is actually the best type of experience he could be getting.

A blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while.

The Cubs know they have their SS for next year. If they brought Castro up in September and he did well, I am not convinced they would have penciled him in for 2011. Isn't there a chance that they would have found a veteran SS to backup or compete with Castro in spring training next year if Castro had a mediocre September?

Anyone could have made the exact same argument about bringing him up this year, though. If he had struggled offensively instead of starting hot, he could have lost his starting job early and never received a true opportunity to prove himself.

Being patient with him this year is not somehow different than being patient with him next year.
