He's playing at a 3+ WAR pace at the moment. With the same amount of playing time, he'd be about 6th among SS in WAR, between Drew and Jeter/Reyes. And he's 20.

Yay.

Let's hope this is just the beginning. His OBP isn't ridiculously high, but I'm pleasantly surprised by his plate discipline at such a young age at the big league level. He's only gonna get better.

His OBP isn't really high, but it's solid at .350 and his IsoD is .056, pretty good for a 20-year-old.

A .767 OPS in his first 240 PAs at 20 years old is so much better than I could have ever expected from him.

Would anyone have thought that after his 1st 200 ABs Starlin would be 4th in MLB in OPS amongst SS? He could pass Alex Gonzalez soon, trailing only Hanley and Tulo. Very impressive.

Just a minor point, which shouldn't detract from how well Castro is doing, but isn't Furcal still a SS? He's listed as having the highest OPS of any regular SS in baseball.

I do find it interesting that in terms of OPS, the top 7 SS in baseball are all in the NL (with Alex Gonzalez now in ATL). Furcal, Tulo, Hanley, Gonzalez, Castro, Uribe and Drew. Cliff Pennington is now at the top of the AL SS and is #8 overall, #2(#9) if you count Jason Donald from CLE.

Yeah, I thought at this point he'd be struggling just to be near .700.

I agree and I would have been perfectly happy if he was hovering right around the high .600s, low .700s right now. It'll be interesting to see how he closes out the season.

It hasn't changed. Lee still is viewed as a potentially elite defender at shortstop.

Of course he's about 3 years away.

Furcal has spent some time on the DL this year, maybe he doesn't have enough ab's to qualify?

I'm sure Castro's numbers aren't inspiring enough to voters. I'd say at this point in time Jaime Garcia is the best overall rookie, but if I were to put money on who would win in the end, I'd probably go with Buster Posey. Strasburg is gonna get shut down too early to warrant consideration over other deserving candidates, Heyward hasn't done much of anything since May, and his injury isn't going to help things. Posey has been awesome
