Chipper plans to retire after the season

Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has heard from two sources that Chipper Jones plans to retire after this season.

It shouldn't come as shocking news. Chipper considered hanging up his cleats after a disappointing 2009 season and has not been able to stay healthy this year. He is batting .228 with a 716 OPS and three home runs in 51 games. The 38-year-old is a .306/.406/.536 career hitter.

HOF?

By rate stats there's no question. However, he was injured too much to accumulate the counting stats and at various points in his career has been historically bad defensively.

I'd say he's likely on the outside looking in.

Chipper Jones is a slam dunk hall of famer.

Mainly because his name is "Chipper." If the numbers when examined closely have him on the bubble, stupid [expletive] like having the name "Chipper" that the HoF loves seals the deal.

if he's not in the hall of fame they might as well not have one

Are you sure you're thinking of the right Chipper Jones?

To be clear...I'm thinking of the voters, not the resume.

Best player on 15 year long dominant team. MVP, several appearances on MVP ballots, all star games, switched positions. I think there's plenty there for the media to latch onto besides traditional counting stats.

i don't think the voters could resist a fact like "3rd among switch hitters in career homeruns". plus he has the all star appearances, playoff appearances, and an mvp that voters love. i'd be shocked if he didn't make it easily on the first ballot. the only holdouts would be the "i'm not putting in anyone from the steroid era" morons.

There are I'm not going to put in anyone from the steroid era morons, and, I'm not going to let anybody in on the first ballot morons. Put those two together, with a handful of he didn't hit enough HR or RBI guys and he will quite easily miss the first ballot. Writers love to use the power of the first ballot.

on a side note, I really wish that HOF voting was public so that the idiot who doesn't vote for Maddux because of the Ruth and Cobb thing is publicly executed.

but, but, Joe DiMaggio didn't get in on the first ballot!!!! (derp herp de derp derp)

But the numbers when examined closely don't have him on the bubble.

Do you even have to examine all that closely? I'm thinking maybe 3rd or 4th ballot. Possible 2nd.

Is that what you think will happen, or what you personally think should happen?

If Bill Mazeroski is a Hall of Famer and Chipper Jones isn't they need to blow up the Hall and start over.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. There are too many legit HOF players NOT in the HOF, but this predecessor to the Ryan Theriot/Aaron Milles really does deserve to get the boot out of the HOF.

But yeah, Chipper is a HOF.

I'm guessing what will. I don't get the point of not voting for a guy on your first ballot, and then deciding he's a HOFer the next year.
