Is it me or is Tom Crean not coaching well the last few weeks?

That would be putting it nicely. We had Minnesota confuzzled by our zone defense in the first half so yeah let's not play that defense AT ALL in the 2nd half. Oh and the fact Sheehey was an important part of our 19-3 first half run and the kid doesn't get back on the court until like 8 minutes left in the game.

Oh and the continued insistence on letting Verdell pretend he is Magic Johnson.

I don't get it anymore. Sure the man can recruit but at this point I'm not sure he could beat Mike Davis in a coaching contest. And yeah, that is being harsh.

That was not the kind of game to instill confidence in Minnesota's tournament chances.

They're lucky Memphis is still ranked or they'd be the most overrated team in the NCAA.

Already feeling better about that Iowa road win.

Ohio State is sleep walking. They are getting out hustled and making horrible turnovers but Iowa's playing hard. It would be cool if they won.

That is very harsh. But Crean's just not making any sense anymore. I knew the team wasn't going to be great, but they shouldn't be doing the same crap they did when they had 13 walk-ons on the roster. I'm seeing 0 improvement on the floor, from a team that brought everyone back.

His substitutions just seem so random. Very often he will sub out the guy with a hot hand almost as if he has just decided he needs to sub guys out every so often and he can't recognize what is happening on the court as he makes his moves.

And to not even stick with that zone in the 2nd half...my god, you are playing a defense that is clearly stifling and confusing Minnesota. So yeah let's not make them beat that defense before we stop using it, just don't use it all in the 2nd half. That is beyond mind boggling. I can't even wrap my head around how that even makes sense.

Man, Iowa is fun to watch considering how bad they are. I'm starting to feel McCaffery as a coach, if they could just get some players now.

Sullinger: 24 points on 11-20 shooting, 2-4 FT, 12 boards, 2 blocks.

Basabe: 22 points on 7-13 shooting, 8-11 FT, 13 boards and 6 blocks.

Mel has been legit when he's healthy. I think he's gonna be good and not just Iowa good.

Too bad, that was a hell of an effort to lead for an entire half and lose by 5 without May playing a minute. Scoring just over a point per possession against the best defensive team in the country (giving up .82 per) was impressive.

We just don't have the athletes to avoid the prolonged bad stretches on each end. Fran is doing is thing though, it's gonna be crucial to add a piece or two in the spring that can compete next year.

I also have no idea how teams are going to stop Sullinger if the officials keep calling his game like this. He can do whatever he wants offensively and is already getting every possible call. He can back people down with force from 12 feet away and knock dudes on their ass but if you try to body him up they call it. He also got away with just putting his head down and using his off hand driving along the baseline where they called a block on Brommer for sliding with him.

If my count was right, three of those blocks were against Sullinger.

If they can keep this up, they're going to knock off a team or two they shouldn't. Not a bad performance considering they're missing Payne and May and their biggest problem was already depth. I just wish they didn't have the brutal start to the B10 season.

My bigger problem was the two times Iowa players (IIRC Brommer and McCabe) took the ball away from him, under the Iowa basket, and they called fouls on them. The second one, Sullinger basically handed the ball to McCabe. I can't wait until Iowa is good enough to take advantage of crappy refs. They aren't at that point...yet.

i don't think iowa will ever be that good, but this pampering of sullinger is a disgrace.

The one on McCabe was awful. He didn't touch his body anywhere and stole it cleanly. He's extremely talented, skilled and smart, I just don't know how the Big Ten can defend him once he has the ball when he's getting calls like this.

I like what Fran is doing with your program thus far. I like beating Iowa way more when you are decent, it makes the rivalry more fun. Plus its nice to have a higher tempo coach in the Big Ten, it helps minimize Bucky Ball.

To be fair, if you're a ref and you see Andrew Brommer ever do something positive against a guy like Sullinger you have to figure he cheated.

The comments in this thread during the first Illinois/Ohio State game will be epic.

i suspect that both arch and augie will have fouled out before the half.

Where is Augustine nowadays? Is he setting moving screens over in Europe, or did he start selling insurance or something?
