That was a good win, but the Illini really need an interior game.

Like when Davis put up 20 on Carolina?

Coming into today we were tops among Big Ten teams in % of points on 2 pointers.

I'm talking about establishing a real physical presence in the post. Someone who can be fed down low, back a guy down and score at the rim. Other than Leonard (potentially), I don't see any players that can fit that bill.

As we have seen (Texas), big teams can really push us around down low, and we don't rebound well at all. I'm concerned about what guys like Sullinger can do to the Illini.

Quick, name me ten guys in all the NCAA that can do that. Sullinger, Morris.....

True. I guess my perception is that while the Illni do get a lot of 2-pointers, relatively few of them are in the paint. The rebounding is genuinely concerning, though.

Yeah, but I think as the season goes on and Jereme and Myers get more adjusted to big time college basketball, we will start to rebound the ball better.

we have flaws, but we have ways of covering them up as well. we are exhausting to defend and can score from anywhere on the court, essentially. that helps cover up the fact that we rebound poorly.

I think this may be the biggest factor as the year goes on. At one point yesterday, they had 4 guys on the floor who were 6'8" or taller and we were probably still quick enough to not get killed with a mismatch. There's just so much height and depth that if they keep the foot on the gas for an entire 40 minutes, they'll wear teams down and hopefully that can cover enough for the fact that the entire team is allergic to boxing out. My high school coach would have us running and doing box out drills for the entire practice after how pathetic they rebounded yesterday. Awful.

Chester was always great at rebounding from the guard spot. I think if we can get Brandon and DJ going to the glass more we might be able to compensate a little bit for our deficiency inside. Finally, shout out to Bill Cole. I crap on you a lot but you played great yesterday.

Did pruitt once foul someone 100 ft from the basket, which allowed winning or tying free throws? Maybe I imagined that.

He hacked DJ White after Pruitt missed free throws that would've won the game, but the refs didn't call it. Pruitt went on to miss more free throws in overtime to lose the game.

And another injury for Purdue. John Hart, the team's third-leading scorer and a solid three-point shooter, is out 4-6 weeks with a a stress fracture in his foot.

Between football and basketball this season, the number of key players they've had miss significant time due to injury is depressingly high.

Don't forget Byrd. Hopefully he'll be back sooner rather than later. Maybe it's Terone Johnson time (as the #3 scorer)?

Don't really understand these rankings. Tennessee is #2 in the RPI, #4 in SOS, and has beaten Villanova head to head on a neutral court, yet ends up ranked 3 spots below the Wildcats?

Because the RPI is completely unreliable and volatile until at least mid-January (and even then it's a lousy measure). Kentucky is #5 SOS according to Pomeroy, Tennessee is #27.

He was talking about Villanova when he said Wildcats. Pre-season ratings may explain the difference between those 2. (Pomeroy's preseason ratings lessen with each game played until they are completely removed sometime in January.)

Villanova also rates out really well in not having any sweaty goblin douchebags on their bench.

I think this will be one of the most fun weeks of the year for Iowa fans. This will be the only week all year that we play two games against non-cupcakes and are favored to win both. Both at home vs. in-state rivals.

Also, player stats are now up on kenpom.com

Ahh, right. Too many Wildcats.

Either way, the main reason the RPI gets really screwed up this early in the year is that the teams are unconnected. This means that it is currently impossible to connect any one team to any other team through games played. This causes some odd fluctuations in the teams early on, until a few games into the conference schedule.

Pomeroy actually fixed that this year by using returning minutes to establish a reliable initial position for teams in the ratings in the preseason (whereas in RPI, everyone starts out blank). His game by game predictions have actually been surprisingly accurate so far this year as a result.

Also, I wanted to say this now before the buzz started, but Utah State has likely lost their last game of the year. Their schedule from here on out is atrocious. This also means they lost to the only two decent teams on their schedule.

So, come March, when they're like 28-2 or something crazy like that, and somehow ranked in the top 10 because that's what happens to teams that win 20 games in a row, hopefully they'll get a 10 seed.
