Colts and Brackett reach a 5 year deal worth 33 million. That's actually a little less than I expected. It's probably a little more than he could get on the open market, but he's turned into such an important player on the defense that I still think it's an excellent move. I really can't believe how much better he's gotten in run defense even with his size.

The Panthers released Jake Delhomme.

Andy is in mourning. :D

Wow, they still owed him $12.5 million guaranteed. That's awful for football

In an uncapped year, they're saving money by doing it now as opposed to later (and they obviously were going to have to do it at some point). That's what the ESPN.com story said anyway, and they know this salary stuff better than I do.

Vick isn't happening. At all. The Panthers haven't touched anyone with character issues since the Rae Carruth disaster and generally get rid of guys who bring them up. Plus, signing Vick would be inventive and interesting, and Carolina (partly because of the first point) is one of the most vanilla organizations in football. The wildest innovative thing they've done is have DeAngelo Williams take Wildcat snaps a couple of times in 2008.

Lions sign DE Kyle Vanden Bosch to a four-year, $26 million deal.

i think Schwartz was in his driveway holding up a boombox, blaring "In Your Eyes"

Apparently he was sitting out in front of KVB's gate at 11:01 CT calling for him. The good thing for Detroit is, if anybody knows how much Vanden Bosch has left, it's Schwartz.

eh, i don't get excited about that. not to say i'm comparing the two but it's just as likely he has an irrational affection for KVB like Marinelli did for all his washed-up former TB players

It's possible and I wasn't in favor of the Titans bringing KVB back. I do think Schwartz is a very good talent evaluator, though, and if he actually feels like KVB has something left, I'd believe him. That said, it could very well be an irrational affection he has for him. I hope Vanden Bosch does well in Detroit, though, as I really like him.

The Vikings can now sign a UFA for a salary a bit higher than what the Bears are paying Taylor in his first year.

I really hope they think Westbrook is healthy. He would be ideal and an upgrade when healthy.

Damn. I hope the Dolphins had a Plan B, considering they just released Gibril Wilson.

OJ Atogwe and Ryan Clark are still available safeties. I don't know how they'd fit the Dolphins' system, but both are solid pickups.

Dolphins also sign Pennington to a 1/$2.5M deal. I didn't really expect that to happen, but it sounds like a backup/insurance role, which is good.

There's still some decent free agent options. No superstars, but then again you don't have to be one to replace Gibril Wilson.

Lions on the verge of acquiring Chris Houston for a 6th and swap of 5ths

man, if they could have gotten Kerry Rhodes for the same deal Arizona got, i'd be positively giddy disposing of all day 3 picks for three decent-to-good defensive starters (of which we had very few last year [two])
