If we are going to use stupid milestones like 3000, 300, 500, etc. than we might as well do this as well:

If you had a career OBP of .400+ over a long enough period of ABs you probably should be in the hall of fame

If i ran into Mariotti on the street I'd probably do something that would get me arrested

a year after voting for Blyleven he sends in an empty ballot in an imitation of one of those old dinosaurs that refuses to vote anyone in. Its all a freaking power trip to these people, unbelievable.

I should have known the HOF would be outrageous considering how correct all the regular season awards were, we don't have that much karma saved up.

If Blyleven doesn't get in the HOF is a complete sham. (it already was before but its getting ridiculous, if he had compiled another 13 wins he'd have been in 10 years ago. Also Santo, etc.)

Blyleven will get in. Nobody gets that close without getting in.

We'll see, clocks ticking I think he only gets 2 more years on.

Blyleven jumped 11.5% this round. He's jumped ~26% over the last 3 rounds. And you think he won't pick up 1% over the next 2 years?

When you get people retracting their votes like Mariotti and people violently opposed to Bert getting in I could see a backlash and him possibly going backwards in voting yes. Do I think he'll get in? Maybe.

Also to answer the OMC's question, I don't see how that guy would detract from the quality of player in the HOF especially with some of the recent inducteees. I don't know anything else other than the guy's B-R page, so feel free to clue me in. I'm gonna stay consistent, buddy.

can't compare pitchers to position players imo.

Why not? Because it destroys the moronic argument that DH's are only part-time players?

yeah ok....that's exactly why.

Pitchers have one baseball skill they do well. They pitch. It's one of the three phases of baseball, and largely the most important, but it's still just one thing. Starting pitchers, now they do it all the time, and are counted on for the majority of the season. Relief pitchers, though? They're more of a part-time player than a DH in the game, even back in the 90s. Edgar Martinez was a more important piece of his team than players like Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith were in their times. Martinez was one of the 5-10 best hitters in the game during his time, and should be hall material based on that ability.

Would you agree that it's easier to be a world class hitter when you don't have to focus on defense at all?

so what kind of numbers do you think edgar martinez puts up if he's a full time first baseman? is he a career .305/.410/.505 hitter instead of .312/.418/.515?

Didn't those people exist this year? When his totals jumped 11%?

Somewhere around there. In 4000 PAs.

Even if Edgar was a full time first baseman, his counting stats aren't where they should be to generally get someone into the HOF. His rate stats are obviously super sexy, but he's only got 309 HR and 2200 hits, and his defense wouldn't have helped him at all (unlike someone like Todd Helton).

I always love hearing the story about Dawson telling the Cubs to enter a figure and he'll play for them at that amount. Can you imagine if Carlos Beltran (baseball reference has compared Andre's performance up to that point in his career most similar to Beltran at the same age) called up Jim Hendry as a free agent and told him to fill in a figure and he'll report to the Cubs in February?

Of course Jim Hendry would fill the figure in as 12 years $250 million backloaded, but that's another story...

It wasn't as altruistic as it sounds on the surface. He wanted off Montreal's turf, and collusion wouldn't let him. It was the union's way of busting collusion.

Congrats to Dawson.

Maybe we can get a certain former Pittsburgh Pirates 2b eliminated from the HOF.

Do you mean Cincinnati?

or Mazeroski

I understand the collusion story behind it, but what made him choose the Cubs over other non-turf teams? From what I read in the story, the Cubs had no interest in him (almost definitely because of the collusion), so why did he choose our loveable losers?

Opinion poll: if Dawson goes in with a C on his hat (and maybe even if he doesn't), should/will the Cubs retire no. 8?

Nope - it was only six years

I interpreted it to mean Maz. He was elected by the Veterans Committee because of one World Series HR, and that was what led to the committee being restructured, which in turn is what has kept Santo out.

One of the writers for 312 did a great job of writing up Dawson's case.

Tim, for whats its worth, a Cards/Illini/Bears fan friend of mine who lives in St Louis texted me to tell me about the site. I had never mentioned it to him before, he had discovered it from post game coverage of the Illini/Gonzaga game that was posted on Illiniboard.

Thanks for the feedback. It's actually doing pretty well, despite the message board not taking off yet. After all, in the past week we've had around 1700 unique visitors to the site, been mentioned in a Yahoo! sports article, and lots more good stuff. I'm just having fun with some of the people giving me a hard time around here. :)

I don't think 312Sports is a terrible idea, but it would be nice if a snippet or quote of some sort accompanied the links that were provided.

As for Dawson, good for him getting elected, too bad for all the people more deserving than him that still aren't in. I dunno, I don't have much interest in HOF debates anymore. I mean, even if you went to the museum every year, the players are just the one room(IIRC and if it hasn't changed since I went 10 years ago).

Looking at the next two years' candidates...

2011: Bagwell, Palmeiro, Kevin Brown, John Franco, John Olerud, Larry Walker, Juan Gonzalez

- Bagwell probably the best bet, but I don't anticipate a lot of support for any of the others.

2012: Bernie Williams, Javy Lopez, ...

- Yeah, there may not be anybody getting in this year. The third best candidate may just be Jeromy Burnitz.

So, Blyleven and Alomar are definitely getting in over the next couple years.
