Like you said, it sounds interesting. Maybe something like "If X player doesn't make it on first ballot, he must wait 5 years to be voted on again" And if that sounds too steep for older people who want to be alive when the call comes, you can either make it so they are on the ballot every year after the 5 years, or you can reduce the wait (so 5 years after not getting in at first, then 3, 2, then every year). I think this would reduce people from considering "1st ballot, 2nd ballot, 3rd ballot, etc" from their voting. Do you think Alomar would have been voted in this year with that rule in place?

Yes, I think if voters knew this was their one chance to vote in Alomar, he would have made it. I think a fair number of voters (easily enough to keep him out) decided not to vote for him this year, probably because of the spitting incident or just generally because they thought he was a prick.

I'm happy to see Dawson get in because I liked him as a player, though I'm not sure he deserved it. I can't believe Alomar and Larkin didn't make it as they should have been no-brainers.

If Dawson had been the only player who I think didn't deserve it, I'd be more vocal about it. As it is, I'm glad for Hawk.

I couldn't make it to Cooperstown for Sandberg, anyone else plan on being there this summer (July 25).

Also, I look forward to going again in 2011 for Ron.

someone voted for David Segui...Kevin Appier?

The vote for Segui might have been a statement from that voter that they aren't opposed to voting for players with a history of PED use. Segui openly admitted to using HGH.

Ah, Gary Carter went in with an Expos cap on. Hawk would be the 2nd and likely last.

He probably will be the last, but Raines has an outside chance of making it down the line.

That seems so ridiculous, but I'll bet you're right.

It's a shot in the dark. Then again, Jim freaking Deshaies got a vote. Of course, he campaigned for it.

it should be required that every hall of fame voter makes their ballot public. that way the people who vote for eric karros and david segui have to defend their jackassery.

sorry, Blyleven got 74.2%. FIVE VOTES SHORT. poor man

at least he'll almost certainly get in next year. especially since no 1st time eligible players will get in, except for maybe bagwell.

correct. Some idiot(s) won't vote for Maddux because of the stupid Ruth/Cobb "rule" and I want to know who those idiots are so we can hunt them down and execute them.

Awesome news.

How does Larkin only get 51%?

Because the people that vote for the Hall are freaking idiots. I'm probably tougher on voting than most on here and Larkin is easily a HoFer, as is Alomar.

I'm kind of glad to see Ventura get a few votes. I don't necessarily believe he belongs in the Hall, but he was solid offensively and very, very good defensively.
Nolan Ryan probably isn't happy. :D

What is the Ruth/Cobb Rule?
There isn't such a rule, per se. I think it's referring to the idea that some voters believe that if Ruth and Cobb weren't unanimous selections nobody should be.

Mariotti is epic-stupid. He left his ballot blank.

I didn't vote for anybody in the baseball hall of fame this year. Ya know why? To me...the first ballot is sacred. I think Roberto Alomar is an eventual Hall of Famer, not the first time. Edgar Martinez, designated hitter, eventually, but not the first time. Same goes for maybe Fred McGriff. As far as Blyleven and Dawson...if they haven't gotten in for years and years I cannot vote them in now. Ripken, Rickey Henderson and Gwynn. They are true first ballot Hall of Famers, but I didn't vote for anybody, throw me out of the Baseball Writers. I don't care.

I really hope that wish is granted.
