I don't know where this originated, but a friend in Tallahassee today told me that Notre Dame would prefer to remain independent in football and with the Big East in hoops/other sports. But if they're forced, they would prefer to join the ACC over other conferences should the Big East fold.

I'm not sure how to feel about that, or if it's even true - but that's another issue, since all the rumors are ridiculous as it is.

PowerMizzou.com has learned through sources that Missouri is squarely in the SEC's crosshairs as the potential 14th team. Our sources have indicated that the SEC wants Mizzou as No. 14, but is willing to wait on the implosion of the Big 12 Conference before making any moves if necessary.

...

Sources with knowledge of Missouri's situation told PowerMizzou.com that the SEC is willing to wait on the Tigers and to let the situation with the Big 12 play out before making a move.

Crazy talk. Who would believe such a thing?

Oh wait

BTW when conferences started getting shaky, Swarbrick added Maryland at FedEx and a 3 game series with Wake that starts with a game at Wake.

Hey WF, you still have football right? Wanna play some games with us? How about next year? Ok. No, no, we'll come to your place first. We'll bring tens of thousands of people and maybe a few TV cameras.

Think he tipped his hand at preferred conference?

I don't know much about Missouri, and I'm pretty clueless about this whole realignment stuff, but I think I'd try not to get too excited until someone other than a Missouri fan-site reports it.

Of course. I know the PowerMizzou writer quite well though, and he's not one to report anything from sources he doesn't trust. That's not to say all this [expletive] won't change in the next hour, but still.

Big Ten would be my first choice but I don't know how realistic it is right now. If SEC comes at us with an offer now, I would hope we'd take it instead of waiting around for a Big Ten offer that might not come.

Like any other report, it shouldn't be taken as fact, but Mizzou's Rivals guy isn't a rumormonger.

I'd probably feel differently in your shoes, but I feel like Missouri is the most obvious add for the bigx. I think I'd prefer to wait than join the sec where you'll get destroyed in fb and won't get the academic bump that you'd get if you were in the bigx.

Here is an interesting article by Nate Silver about the geography of college football fans, and why Rutgers is a more attractive school than Kansas.

Yeah, the guy from Power Mizzou is a straight shooter who doesn't buy into rumor mill stuff from what I've seen.

That is a double edged sword for Mizzou though. Do you chance being left out in the cold if things don't shake out the way you hope they do and there's no offer from the Big X or do you jump on the SEC offer and get your ass handed to you on a regular basis in football? Tough call without any of the inside knowledge I'm sure some of these university presidents are working with.

If the ACC's letting them keep the NBC/Versus contract, then obviously it's the right move. Nobody's said otherwise. It'd certainly be a dumb move for the ACC though, even with the fact that I consider ND the #1 prize in the conference shuffle. If ND becomes a full ACC member with no extra benefits than Swarbrick has failed in a way Kevin White couldn't even imagine.

I read that opposite, since Kansas had a stronger fan base they would be the favorites. The only thing running contrary to that was Rutgers strong showing in NYC itself. But I really didnt read any conclusion by Silver, did I miss it?

If the ACC is locked down, and it seems like it is with them aggressively adding teams and raising the penalty for leaving the conference, then who else does the SEC have to offer? They've apparently said no to WVU. Louisville? South Florida? They're no different than WVU. Kansas? They aren't really desirable from a media perspective and they don't even border an SEC state. They could wait for a while I suppose, but I have to think they'll want 14 sooner than later. Seems like Mizzou is kinda their only real option, unless they can talk an ACC team into dealing with the consequences that school just agreed to increase.

ah...I confused Missouri with Kansas. I meant Mizzou. Same difference really. mizzou/kansas...

What? That's the craziest thing you've said in the last 2 days.

Basically, Silver concludes that the only way further expansion makes sense for the Big Ten is if they were to add Notre Dame and/or Texas. Along with one or both of them, adding Missouri or Rutgers makes sense to add those markets, or possibly Kansas/UConn if the conference were concerned with a basketball following. No other schools would be worth it.

He also mentions that it makes sense for Notre Dame to remain independent while they can, since they have such a national following at this point.

Yeah, that's the same article that was posted early this morn. Always love Silver's stuff though.

Very interesting article. There is quite a bit of guesswork and I think it fails to emphasize the importance of access to markets even if a particular school isn't great, but interesting either way.

I'd welcome Texas A&M and Missouri to the SEC. Both are top 100 schools academically and are solid in all facets.

pretty sad that i'll be jumping for joy if iowa state ends up in the leftover 12 or whatever it will be called. gross.

On the plus side, you'll be able to keep your rivalries with Kansas State and Baylor, and add new rivalries with storied programs like South Florida, Central Florida, and maybe even Rice.
