true, although it seems a lot more important when youre trying to keep your school from going to a mid major conference.

haha, it's worse than that. There's an article on the front page of the Rivals KU site. This craziness has extended well beyond posters tracking planes.

no answer for my academics question?

Not sure about other conferences. The reason it's important with the big 10 is the oft mentioned CIC affiliation.

When people talk about academics in this case they aren't really talking about the average GPA of the school's incoming undergrads. It's about research, and more importantly, the huge amount of money that is at stake with such research projects.

and Duke would get less because they play Tennessee in football?

i'm not sure if other schools have research-sharing and resource-sharing arrangements like the big ten. but your point may be valid - being in the same athletic conference hasn't stopped vandy from being a really good school and mississippi state from being a bad one, or stanford and cal-berkeley from being excellent academically and wazzu being kind of a joke.

i think virginia tech would make more sense in the sec because they've got a strong football program. miami would be a good choice too.

The SEC does have some interest in Va Tech. While Miami, Ga Tech, Clemson, and Florida State have also been mentioned, from what my booster friend told me he's heard, the SEC doesn't think they add anything to the conference as far as expanding viewerships. If they want to keep up with what the Big Ten and Pac-10 are doing, the SEC feels it needs to expand into areas where they don't already have a foothold. Florida is already covered as is Georgia and South Carolina. Adding aTm would be huge in expanding into Texas and Duke and UNC would add North Carolina in addition to making the SEC a more lucrative conference when it comes to basketball.

Missouri would probably be the fourth choice, though there is an eye toward Kansas.

Also, there's been some talk that Va Tech and Virginia won't be separated, but who knows for sure.

I don't completely trust this guy. He's in the know, but I also think he exaggerates and represents his opinion as coming from other stuff he's heard, but if you believe him...the SEC's choices would be 1. aTm 2. UNC 3. Duke 4. Missouri (Getting those would easily allow the conference to add two schools to the east and two to the west without any reallingment.

Failing that, the other schools that would be considered: Va Tech, Kansas, West Virginia, Clemson, Miami, Florida State, Ga Tech, and TCU.

Texas is afraid to play in the SEC. It has nothing to do with academics. They kept Vince Young and Jamal "Mushmouth" Charles eligible to play 3 years there. They can't be that concerned with academics.

Oh, I should have added that really aTm and Oklahoma were the preferred two in the beginning, but it appears Oklahoma preferred the Pac-10 from the beginning and so the SEC will have to look elsewhere.

that's some pretty dreadful travel times for OU and Texas if they joined the Pac10

But if they join along with aTm and Okie State, and Texas Tech the Texas 4 with the two Oklahoma schools will be placed in a division with the two Arizona schools to form a Western division so it's really not much different than what they are doing now.

This article talks about schools of similar academic quality (specifically the big10 and its AAU members) being able to more easily collaborate. If 11 of the 12 of your schools in your conference collaborate as a member of a prestigious organization, it's a little weird for the odd school out I'd imagine.

schools don't have emotions. I doubt they feel ashamed at not getting invited to a party.

no, but chancellors and provosts and faculty do. being left out of a collaboration like that could ruffle feathers.

btw, for the poster who joked about the CIC melting down about adding KU...what about Nebraska. Not exactly Yale in the plains there, either.

I thought it was fairly humorous that the VT/Virginia non-separation talk came up tonight...the two have been in the same conference for all of six years, they're not exactly joined at the hip here.

As an OU fan, this is awesome. Everyone fighting over my school, and Texas, can only help us in the long run. On the other hand, it must suck to be Kansas. They're awful at most sports but they do have a hell of a basketball program. I wonder what is going to happen to that when they end up in the Mountain West

Old Style,

Which way is aTm leaning from what you are hearing?

In a week's time it went from probably 90% to Pac-10 to 60% to Pac-10 to we have the votes on the Board of Regents for the SEC. Now our insider says Don Beebe is making a huge push to keep the Big 12 afloat that is actually making everyone rethink their moves. Even still, I expect us to bolt to the SEC. If we don't, I will be pissed.
