that's true, but i have to think that the lousy field conditions in the florida bowl games probably favored big ten teams.

How many starters does Iowa have returning? I thought I remembered reading earlier in the year that they are full of underclassmen.

i'd guess they'd be in the top 8 or so in next year's preseason poll. would help if spivea and bulaga came back obviously.

Most people come back. If Stanzi can ever gain consistency they could be a title contender, considering they were for a while without him doing that.

I'm pretty freaking excited. This is the biggest bowl win since 1959.

You have to score a TD here.

I'd love to know how long GT's 2 minute drill takes. 4 minutes? 6?

Stupid question. GT's 2 minute drill takes about 45 seconds because it can't get a first down.

Nesbitt did look out of place in the two-minute drill, but I am pretty sure Georgia Tech is right at the top of the NCAA in terms of the number of 40 yard+ plays/TD plays.

This should have been a blowout by Iowa, but a win is a win. What is great is this team should be even better next year. They'll likely have a three-headed monster at RB with Robinson, Wegher, and Hampton.

A team like Iowa (a defense that doesn't play aggressive and plays well disciplined) is not a good match up for a triple option team. I thought they'd play well, but Tech didn't do anything out side of one drive.

Hopefully Stanzi stops the interception thing.

That's normally true, but I don't think it favored NU as much as say, Penn St.. We were up against a run-first team and we have a pass happy offense. Kafka threw 78 balls!

If you want to say that it slowed down a quick defense, I'll give you that.

Total BCS wins

Boise State 2

Utah 2

ACC 2

Only states to go 2-0 in bowls this year: Iowa, Idaho and Utah.

Totally dominant game by the defense. Stanzi showed how good he can be at times and then he goes through stretches where he doesn't see the field and makes bad decisions. Fake field goal call was interesting. They obviously must have seen on film that the outside man crashes hard and thought they could sneak past him.

Should end the season ranked #6 or 7. 4th time in 8 years they'll finish in the top 8. Hopefully one of Spivey/Bulaga will come back. Should be somewhere between 5-10 preseason next year.

It's not like southern teams have never seen rain. And 50 degrees is hardly bone chilling. It's still a game in the south against southern teams, at best it partially negated the disadvantage.

Impressive win by Iowa. Although that gimmick offense isn't that hard to beat when you have time to study it. They rely on catching people off balance.

I didn't get the fake field goal call. Why not just go for it on 4th down there? You put the ball in the hands of a guy who can't handle it and you run the risk of what happened, and what almost happened. Instead of GT getting the ball on the 3 worst case scenario, they get better field position and could have ran back a fumble for a TD. I would have liked to see a 3rd down run there, and then 4th down anything other than fake field goal.

I don't know how much of that is Ferentz and how much is the OC, but I had the same thought. I don't even mind the 3rd down pass (though I'm not sure it could have been caught anyway), but only if you're then going to go for it on 4th. I'd prefer running on 3rd, but I can understand trying to catch them off guard. The fake makes little sense (and the actual type of fake called makes no sense).

The only people it faked were the cameramen, or director, who were slow to pick up on what was happening (although not as bad as NU game). I also didn't think that 3rd down pass was catchable, unless that guy has crazy leaping ability or my angles in my head were way off. I don't mind passing there, and passing again. I was just thinking that running on 3rd and leaving the option open on 4th was the best way to go at the time.

Huh. I really thought Iowa would lose, but they played a good game and got the win. Nicely done.

As for field conditions playing a part in the Big 10's success: so what? Bad field conditions happen. Teams that are able to take advantage should gain an edge. Teams that need a perfect track to succeed should suffer for not being able to adapt. There's no reason that should be painted as some kind of "bad" thing.

I watched more college football this year than I've ever watched in my life, and what I get for that is an 11-21 bowl picks record so far. Definitely never betting on these again.

Don't forget, their #2 RB, Jeff Brinson, also missed the whole season because of injury. IIRC, he played 1 play in the second game. They'll have 5 RBs next year that are either RS FR or Sophomores. And 3 will have a ton of game time.

Don't remember who asked, but Iowa has 16 underclassmen starters. Figuring Spievey and Bulaga probably leave, that's 14 returning. The only question mark will be the O-line. They return 1 starter if Bulaga leaves. Two of the probable replacements have a decent amount of experience, and they have recruited there very well the last 2-3 years, so hopefull there's not much of a dropoff.

The defense will be nasty. Even losing the 3 that they do, they get 2 probable starters back that were injured all year, and the D-Line will be intact. They'll go into next year with the best D-line in the nation.

This is so true. Why is it never used as an excuse the other way, when "cold-weather" teams like Ohio State plays LSU in a Louisiana bowl, or Michigan vs Florida in a FL bowl, or PSU plays USC in the Rose Bowl?

I know the current big bowl destinations are alluring for travelers, but I think it would be awesome to see a northern team play for a championship against a USC or Florida or LSU at Lambeu field or Foxboro...

What?

I hear that excuse every year.
