Gill probably is a good coach and I certainly have nothing against him apart from ruining last season for me, but if "the program was epically bad before he got there" is being used, then maybe KU should have pursued Al Golden, who took Temple, a program just as bad as Buffalo at one time, to 9 wins this year, more than Gill ever got at UB.

The Prairie View A&M head coach really needs a promotion quickly. PVAM lost some 80 straight games and their worst loss was 92-0 in that stretch. They rebounded and won the SWAC championship this year.

But yeah, Gill is a very good hire and, I think, is a very good coach. Al Golden should be getting a lot of interest quite soon as well if he can keep Temple in the 6-8 win range.

Joe Schad reported that Notre Dame actually interviewed Golden. Granted it was almost certainly a "let's get acquainted with this guy just in case he keeps doing well and we need a coach again in 5-7 years" type thing, but his name is definitely out there. I'm guessing he's gone from Temple after 2010.

Very possible. I heard his name on occasion this offseason, but he'll likely be a hot name by next season.

According to the KC Star:

Gill will bring with him Carl Torbush, formerly the head coach at North Carolina and currently the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, to be his defensive coordinator and Chuck Long, formerly the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma and formerly the head coach at San Diego State, to be his offensive coordinator. Gill is also expected to bring two other former head coaches onto his staff at KU.

Anybody have any thoughts on Torbush and Long. I'm ashamed to say I don't know much about either.

Wasn't Long the OC at OU when Jason White was the QB? If so, I think that reflects pretty well on Long based on how well White played under him and how little of a career he's had after OU.

Yes, Chuck "3rd and" Long was the OC who helped Jason White and his 2 bad knees earn a Heisman. Long was also Mangino's replacement as OU's OC after Mangino was hired by Kansas. OU fans don't like him, but I really don't understand Sooner fans' constant hatred of assistants.

andy's so bitter about ball state losing that game. let it go dude. It's ancient history t this point.

plus, i mean, it's ball state

Exactly, it's Ball [expletive] State, and because it's Ball [expletive] State, 12-0 will never, ever happen again. I'm really not sure why bitterness about the way that ended is so surprising.

Illinois hires Paul Petrino (brother of Bobby and former Arkansas offensive coordinator) to fill the o-coordinator vacancy.

At first glance, I love the hire.

Yea looks like a good hire, but until we get somebody with half a damn clue to fix the D, its not going to matter.

well, disch and mallory have been demoted and i'm sure that petrino has been brought in to take over should zook fail. i like the hire a lot.

Gill is a great hire for a non-top tier program like Kansas. You can't underscore how good a .500 season is at a place like Buffalo.

And UCLA interviewed Al Golden a few years ago so he's not just now being discovered.

Yeah my first thought was that Zook may have just hired his replacement. Hasn't his brother always called the plays though?

There's one big difference between Al Golden and Turner Gill.

I can agree with what TT said. I think he's a good hire, but out of the four realistic possibilities I was probably hoping for him the most. While past records aren't the greatest thing to look at, 20-30 at Buffalo is quite putrid. Most of the time when MAC coaches get hired into big-time BCS programs, they had their MAC teams fighting for the conference championship every year. Gill definitely did not.

That said, though, I do think Gill will be able to recruit very well in the Kansas City area.

How solid are your guys' recruits since the Mangino ordeal, and have you had any decommits since then? I know Keeston Terry came out and said he was staying, but I haven't heard much about the other guys.

For the Mizzou fans criticizing Gill's record at Buffalo, here's a comparison of Gill's record in his first four years vs. Pinkel's record in his first four years at Toledo.

Pinkel (taking over for Saban's 1990 10-2 Squad).

1991 - 5-5-1

1992 - 8-3

1993 - 4-7

1994 - 6-4-1

Total - 23-19-2

Gills (taking over a 1-10 team):

2006 - 2-10

2007 - 5-7

2008 - 8-6

2009 - 5-7

Total - 20-30

Here's their MAC conference records.

Pinkie's first 4 years: 16-14-2

Gill's first 4 years: 14-18

That's kinda the point, isn't it? No one would've said "great hire" if anyone had hired Pinkel after 1994. He actually built something, after those 4 years he had 5 first place finishes and 2 second place finishes in his last 7 seasons. Even besides that success, the additional 7 years of experience is a crucial difference as well. I'm not saying that Gill is destined to failure. I'm saying that because of his minimal and not mind blowing track record, he has a lot in common with coaches who have succeeded as well as failed.

On a related point, how long do you think Gill gets to prove himself? To extend the Pinkel analogy, do you think he lasts if he has 1 winning season and 1 bowl appearance in the first 4 years like Pinkel did?

Illinois:

Our sources have confirmed that Head Coach Ron Zook has interviewed Kansas State Co-Defensive Coordinator Vic Koenning for the Defensive

Coordinator spot with the Illini.

Anybody know anything about Koenning?

Oh and Zook is trying to recreate the Louisville offense from a few years back, as hes hired Petrino as OC, Greg Nord as Tight Ends Coach, and Jeff Brohm as QB coach.

I think the point is, he did just as much as Pinkel did w/o the benefit of Nick Saban's players or the Ohio recruiting field. No one would have said great hire RE: Pinkel because he turned a 10-2 team into an also-ran and then rebuilt them. That's the difference between the two. Gill built something out of nothing. Pinkel had a bad start at a place where the previous coach had shown winning was possible. To his credit, Pinkel did end up having a great run.

It's hard to say how long Gill will get. He'll get a pass next year. People will want to see some results by year two, though. The problem is, those are the years we get the tough south rotation. I think 1 winning season and 1 bowl appearance will have a lot of people grumbling. Not sure he would survive that. I guess it would also depend on HOW they were losing and what kind of recruits he was bringing in.

It looks like the Central Michigan to Cincinnati pipeline will continue:

Chippewas coach Butch Jones will be named the next Cincinnati coach, three people briefed on the decision told ESPN.com's Joe Schad on Tuesday. It's unclear whether Jones would coach Cincinnati in its bowl game Jan. 1. The Chippewas will play Troy in the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 6.

Unknown whether Dan LeFevour left a team meeting early and popped off to the press about Jones 'leaving for the money'.

I wonder who Central will get now.

As somebody mentioned before, I wouldn't be surprised if whoever they got had a no-Cincinnati clause in his contract.

If so, it would be the first-ever such clause in a CFB head coaching contract (b/c really, who would have ever thought?)

Has it ever happened before that the same school supplied the same school with back to back head coaches?
