Hopefully Mike Leach to Louisville.

That would be a good hire, I think.

that would be a great hire, but i'm not sure that's really an improvement for him.

i'm also wondering if any of the big name pro guys (cowher/gruden especially) have any interest in going to college. obviously if they went the college route it would be to a high-profile program and not a team like marshall.

He'd move from a team perpetually stuck behind Oklahoma and Texas to a team that has no real stalwart in front of it for the Big East championship. Pitt, West Virginia and Cincinnati appear to be consistently good teams, but none of them match the consistency OU and Texas provide in the Big 12 South.

He may not rise in prestige, but he would rise in opportunity for BCS berths and conference titles. I think that's worth it.

Unless they go to Notre Dame, I'm not sure the openings are there for a big-name NFL coach. After ND, you have Virginia, Marshall, Kansas and Louisville likely opening up. The Cardinals might pay enough, but purely on prestige, I don't think any of those programs are there in football.

The two things KU has going for it are pay (I think they pay Mangino over 2.5/yr) and facilities. But it's definitely not a prestigious job.

I honestly would rather have Kelly than Stoops unless you're really afraid that Kelly doesn't have the pull to recruit nationally.

Why? Stoops has a title ring. He's been to like half the national title games since the BCS was instituted. He has coached 2 QBs, 1 of whom clearly didn't have pro-football chops, to a Heisman Trophy, almost coached AD to a 3rd, and until this injury-riddled year had done nothing but pile up 9 and 10-win seasons. And he's done all that at one of the top-tier programs.

If it's true, I hope we go after Sumlin to replace Stoops.

I think you should go after Charlie Weis ;-).

he could wear all of mangino's old clothes

imagine them on the same plane together. the stewardess would have to put one on each wing just to balance the weight distribution.

His resume is top notch but I think you have to temper it with the fact that Oklahoma didn't really deserve to be in any of the last three BCS title games Stoops took them to. On top of that he didn't win any of them and they weren't especially competitive games either. There's two other BCS losses in that time frame and he's lost 4 out of the last 5 against Texas.

Kelly's cheaper, hungrier (i.e. has more to prove), he's on an upswing, and his staff isn't constantly being pillaged of its best coaches like Stoops (which is a pretty big factor in why OU hasn't been able to win a big game in years) is.

Either would be a huge improvement over Weis, obviously, but I just like Kelly more.

It's a sign of a good program but it does hurt after awhile. Even if the guys you're bringing in to replace the assistants who left are good there's still an adjustment period where things can get rocky.

The amount of assistants Stoops has lost that have become pretty good HCs elsewhere is pretty insane: M. Stoops, Pelini, Leach, Mangino, Sumlin, Chuck Long (ok, not him).

I hope they grab Kelly, because it leaves KU a snowball's chance at Patterson. If Stoops leaves for ND, I have to think Patterson would be OU's first choice.

I can't imagine him leaving TCU for Kansas just because he really likes living in the Ft Worth area. OU is a different story.

At this point, I'll worry about winning the big games when we can get to them. Stoops has shown he can get to them. And how did Oklahoma not deserve their bid in the 04 BCS title game? They were a clear #2 behind USC. They were ranked #1 the time before that (sketchy perhaps, but still).
