According to the website FootballCoachScoop.com, Mark Richt has spoken to two new candidates regarding Georgia’s open defensive coordinator slot.

Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri — who has been at Alabama for one year and has been among the names rumored to be on Richt’s list — has apparently been contacted officially about the job.

Also, a new name (but a familiar one to SEC fans) is in the mix… first-year Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Internet reports claim that Richt has already made contact with Steele, who is a South Carolina native.

A source familiar with the hiring process indicated the Vols could fill the first of their two vacant positions as early as tonight, and it would appear to be a return engagement. Kiffin refused to address specifics after participating in a Chick-fil-A Bowl press conference on Thursday, but all signs point to former UT assistant Kippy Brown being the leading candidate to take over as the wide receivers coach for the departed Frank Wilson.

 

Kippy Brown was at Tennessee in the '80s and '90s when we put out wide receivers like Carl Pickens and Alvin Harper. I really like this move. He's apparently also worked with Andre Johnson while an assistant in the NFL.

If you look back here or in the ND coaching thread, you'll see that I posted something about footballcoachscoop running baseless rumors. A guy literally emailed them from a hotmail account and said he heard a rumor (that was unbelievable) and they not only ran it, but embellished. It's a terrible website.

Contrary to the credibility of the website, I have actually heard that GA is interested in the former Alabama assistant Kevin Steele, and current Alabama assistant Sunseri. So that's legit. These two are mentioned because Kirby Smart Richt flat out turned down GA, (or he didn't like the fact that Richt doesn't like to pay his assistants anything substantial) and Bud Foster also refused Richt's job offer. If GA lands one of the two they would get solid coaches, but it wouldn't surprise me if Sunseri turn GA down and wait for something worth it next year like Kirby Smart and Jim McElwain. So I have no idea who GA will end up with as DC.
