Bud Selig has declined an overture from a group of baseball owners asking him to stay on after his contract ends in 2012, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the sources said a group of five owners approached Selig, 75, asking him to stay on. That approach led to his taking the job when Fay Vincent was forced out of the commissioner's office 1992, and to his agreeing to a contract extension last year.

Any ideas as to who might replace him?

what is wrong with a no name fan that loves the game, how hard could it be? Hand out a couple of fines, suspend a few and get rid of the DH. The big decision would be where to move the Marlins and Nationals. I can't see a major strike in the next couple of years the players have burnt that bridge (along with the economy)

The players burnt down the economy? And here I thought it was Obama.

The commisioner of baseball is put in place by the owners to protect their interests. Forget about any idealists worried about the purity of the game. It'll be some financial guy looking out for the billionaires.

Unfortunately, yes. I don't like Selig, but I think he has some interest in what is best for baseball, not just the owners. We may be getting someone worse that Selig.

baseball has been pretty awesome under selig

there have been some pretty big negatives - steroid stuff, the way the expos and twins were handled during the contraction business, various cities essentially being strong-armed into paying for new ballparks (although this isn't just specific to baseball). but overall, i think one has to look at how the visibility and access to the game have grown greatly; MLB's overall revenue has increased by more than 500 percent since selig became commissioner, the wild card has been a huge success, interleague play has been a success, and the world baseball classic - while having a lukewarm reception in the U.S. - has been very successful abroad. besides the 1994 strike, they've managed to have all this money coming in without a significant work stoppage, despite the mlb players' union being the strongest in all of sports. franchises have become drastically more valuable and even average players have gotten very rich.

i know that everyone hates bud selig, but frankly i think he's been one of the best commissioners in mlb history and should be in the hall of fame.

Selig either hits something right on the head or completely botches it. Having said that (curb reference), baseball will be in a better spot after he retires than before he started.

He's still a boob though.

I think he will be eventually. Several previous commissioners have been inducted, and I think the good outweighs the bad during his tenure.

Agreed completely.
