Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports the Mariners have shot down rumors of a Milton Bradley-for-Carlos Silva swap.

That sound you just heard was a collective sigh of relief from Chicago's Wrigleyville neighborhood. The Cubs should want nothing to do with Silva, who has been awful since signing a four-year, $48 million with the Mariners in 2007. Bradley may be on the move, but probably not to Seattle.

the MARINERS shot it down??? that means hendry was clearly going to do it but the mariners didn't want to.

Or someone who wasn't associated with Cubs/Mariners put the rumor out there and the Mariners were the first team to respond to debunk it.

You forgot that Hendry was also planning on signing Silva to a 5 year extension. And he's fat.

The Cubs appear close to trading Milton Bradley to a "surprise" American League team, said a source with knowledge of the process.

The deal is said to be "three-quarters done" and could be completed tonight.

It involves a two-team deal in which the Cubs would receive a player who would then need to be flipped to another team, but it's doesn't involve the long-rumored Tampa Bay Rays.

Maybe Ordonez from Detroit or Overbay from the Jays?

Yep, that's clearly what that means. There's no escaping sound logical deduction.

That it's for someone getting flipped makes it hard to believe it's anyone to get overly excited about, especially since he won't be here. And if he's getting flipped, have we heard anyone other than Luis Castillo mentioned as a possible flippee?

And if it's 3/4 of the way done, does that mean it involves 4 players instead of 3? I could see it being 2/3 of the way done or 1/3 of the way done, but 3/4 implies that 3 of 4 parts of a deal were required to complete a deal.

plus if it's someone that has to be flipped to another organization, you should probably make sure you can do that before you pull the trigger on the first trade. the last thing you need is some high-priced DH or 1B or 3B that nobody else wants and has nowhere to play on the current team.

If it is Castillo, I find it a bit odd that the Mets are sitting there waiting on Hendry in order to improve their team. Maybe the Cubs are the only team that have any desire for Castillo and Castillo has to go before they can add anyone?

Weird offseason.

I guess the 2 AL teams that would stand out as the most "surprising" would be the Twins or Red Sox.

red sox would be weird because they already have logjams at a lot of positions (v. martinez and j. varitek at C, youk/martinez at 1B, lowrie/scutaro at SS, lowell/scutaro at 3B) and wouldn't really have room for bradley unless he or drew played LF and hermida became a backup. but supposedly they've been trying to get rid of lowell for a while; they could conceivably deal lowell for bradley, put youk back at 3B, put martinez at 1B, varitek becomes starting catcher again). that still doesn't solve what to do with bradley, but it does clear up some of their infield/C logjam and obviously lowell wouldn't have a position on the cubs so he'd need to be dealt away.

The Mets want to move Castillo so that they can signed Orlando Hudson is the rumor I heard.

Boston would definitely be weird. I can't see that being a good fit since it's perceived (right or wrong) as being one of the most racist cities in all of american sports. I can just see that ending well. Even less well than his stay here.

It is odd but maybe they know they can get something done and one of the moves they would likely make would be to sign O-Dog, but it would be foolish to do that before trading Castillo in case something would fall through with the Cubs plus it would take away some leverage in negotiations. I could see it being the Indians what about this?

Cubs get: Wood and Castillo

Indians get: Bradley

Mets get: Jake Westbrook

- Wood+Westbrook's remaining contracts are about equal to Bradley's remaining contract (assuming Wood's 2011 doesn't kick in)

- Mets add pitching and Castillo's ($12 mil remaining for 10/11') and Westbrook's ($11 mil for 2010) contracts are just about equal

The things holding this up maybe could be the Mets trying to get someone to take Perez, Indians trying to get someone to take Hafner, or maybe they are minor things like exchanging of money (based on these contracts being exchanged it would be a matter of less than $1 mil) or figuring who gets prospects and where they go.

It would be funny if it was the White Sox. Not sure what the bad contract would be coming in return or who the PTBF would be.

I honestly think Bradley would be a great fit there so long as they see him as an almost everyday DH and part-time OF. His numbers would probably project better and Southside fans would probably embrace his anti-Cub legend immediately. From a Sox perspective, how great would it be to stick it to the Cubs and get a couple of great years out of Bradley for pennies on the dollar after he was worthless for us?

this doesn't matter. lots of minorities were beloved in boston if they worked hard and produced. and if milton doesn't work hard and produce then he'll fail anywhere, so who cares if they're yelling racist [expletive] at him.

If Westbrook's progression from TJS is progressing well(it seems like he SHOULD have pitched at some point in 2009, doesn't it?) he'd be an interesting return for Bradley actually.

I'm speaking only from Bradley's point of view. I don't personally believe that Red Sox fans are racist. Nor do I believe that Cubs fans are either. I don't even believe Bradley ever heard a racial epithet spoken toward him (edit: at Wrigley Field). I think for him perception is reality and eventually if he's not panning out he can put the blame on someone else. Why not blame the 'famously' racist Boston fans??

Surprise AL teams? How about (and I'm not endorsing ANY of the below):

- A's: Beane is a frequent trading partner.

- Angels: In exchange for GM Jr. and prospects.

- Orioles: I have no idea why or who we'd get in return.
