Week 10: Bears @ 49ers (Thurs, 7:20 PM NFLN, WPWR)

awful game. Our recievers are dog crap, and are way too young to be starting. Our OC is an idiot and our coach refuses to hold anybody accountable publically.

I'm done watching this season and I hope the bears lose every game from here on out. Change needs to be coming.

why so the Broncos can get a top 8 pick and laugh in our faces?

I'm hoping the higher the pick the higher the contract Denver has to shell out for a 1st rd pick. And if there is a god they would get the Michael Crabtree of next yr's class. (extended holdout)

Crabtree's better than any of the WRs the Bears have.

True, but I wasn't talking about the Broncos landing a talent equal of Crabtree, but a player with a Crabtree esque ego to which would lead to an extended holdout.

Wilson, knock it off man. I think you are trolling the Bears game threads and I hate the Bears.

Trolling? I am telling it like it is. I am a huge Bears fan but I am no apologist for a QB just because he has talent. As I said before, he is just as much to blame as the lines are. It is not considered trolling to say that.

Sure you can. However, when you show up just after a frustrating loss saying anything and everything in a way that will obviously piss people off you should expect to be called a troll.

That was a really physical but ugly game with all the mistakes and penalties. Your defense played a great game. Smith isn't a very good QB but he's been competent.

I just don't know what the Bears do to fix that o-line. It's not just 1 or 2 guys, they almost need a total overhaul. Chris Williams just does not look good. Pace is obviously done. Probably couldn't read too much into Schaffer's time tonight. Kreutz doesn't have a lot of good football left in him. Omiyale was really bad and Beekman didn't look much better. Without a 1st or 2nd it will be tough to find immediate impact.

Forte is a really good receiver but even with the o-line struggles he doesn't look very tough.

Cutler probably didn't deserve 5 INT's but he also could have had another one in the 4th quarter when he threw the ball up as he was getting hit. I think he feels like he has to do everything (which he does) and the o-line struggles plus not having a guy like Marshall are just leading to some ugliness.

I'm so pissed. I'm so negative on Cutler now, I mean this season has been nothing short of abysmal.

Yeah because this entire season is Cutler's fault.

My posts are not devoid of logic. Cutler was terrible. I live in Atlanta and I only watch the national games. It just so happens the Bears have been terrible during those. I try not to post during games I don't see. I'm sorry if you can't take criticism of your team when they are bad. I thought as Cubs fans we would be used to it.

Cutler has more talent obviously, but I think it is probable that with Orton the Bears win the GB game and tonight's.

I don't think that was what he was saying.

Your first post post game was, and I quote:

You Cutler defenders still here?

That has nothing to do with the team or your opinion. That was a straight smug call out statement right after a last-second loss.

The GB game I'll give you, but how the [expletive] does Orton win this game?

It had to do with my opinion of other posters and their opinion of the Bears. It was a football related comment. We all criticize each other on this board. I take it all the time but I really don't let it bother me. Neither should you. It was an emotional loss and emotional comments usually occur afterwards.

Orton could have led a TD drive. Just one. The SF defense is nothing to writehome about, at least not tonight.

I actually will agree with this. SF was saved by bad throws. They gave up a lot of yards. The 49ers offense was awful. If there weren't the turnovers the Bears probably score more than 10 points. Orton would take the sack rather than force the throw. Sometimes that is worse than trying to make something happen but in this game where the 49ers did nothing with the ball it would have been better.

I think that's a tad too generous an appraisal of Orton's ability to lead a TD drive with an OL like this and sans a rushing option. Just because he wouldn't have thrown some of those picks (not sure why the receivers wouldn't be falling or taking bad routes with Orton, but whatever) doesn't mean he would have actually scored. So he takes the sacks...and? Are they even getting close enough for enough FG's with Orton?

Matt Forte isn't the biggest problem with the running game but he's kind of getting to be a big one. I almost wish it'd come out that he was nursing a significant injury because then I'd have hope he'd get better.

After sleeping off the frustration/anger/booze and thinking about it, I've got a few things to say about last night's game...

1) Would Kyle Orton have won this game for the Bears? My gut instinct is probably, but that the final score would have been something abominable like 12-6. However, a win's a win. This was another game where Cutler had his share of interceptions that had more to do with his supporting cast and coaches than him, but his first and last interceptions were pretty much inexcusable for him. He moves the ball down the field much more effectively than Kyle Orton does, but he also has a tendency to force the ball much more than Orton did. However, keep in mind that there's no way in hell this team would have beaten Seattle and Pittsburgh with Orton at the helm.

2) Following up on that point, I think the reason why Cutler forces the ball is because his offense sucks. Period. His receivers are small and can easily be bullied in the secondary. Some of his receivers are lazy and cut off their routes unnecessarily. Others don't go back to the ball when Cutler's in trouble. Olsen made some nice catches, but SF clearly game-planned around him. The OL and running game have been hammered to death this season, so there's little need to say much more about them. What's inexcusable is, despite the lack of talent, Ron Turner has not come up with an effective game plan. I've been hoping to see him utilize roll-outs, inside traps, and the like to keep defenses honest and to get some of the pressure off of Cutler. Instead, we get really predictable plays that other teams have no trouble defending.

3) With all of that out of the way, one thing stuck out about tonight's game. Cutler was sacked 0 times. What's becoming apparent is that Cutler is developing the opposite bad habits of Aaron Rodgers. Where Rodgers' problems partially stem from holding onto the ball too long and getting pulverized for it, Cutler's much more likely to pass the ball, even if it's a questionable decision, when he is under pressure. I don't know the root cause for this tendency, but for whatever reason, he doesn't seem very likely to either tuck the ball and take the sack or to get out of harm's way and throw the ball out of bounds when nobody's open. It might be bad coaching (Pep Hamilton's still around after all these years for some unknown reason), it might be Cutler's tendency to gamble, it might be Cutler trying to avoid contact, it might be a combination of those things, or it might be something else altogether. Regardless, when Cutler has 17 INTs in 9 games, even if a number of those are not Cutler's fault, that still is emblematic of a fundamental flaw in Cutler's game.

There have been a number of successful QBs in NFL history who have been able to either overcome flaws like that or to find themselves on teams that could game plan around and down play those flaws. Whether or not that ever happens with Cutler is something we can't predict. As the team is constructed right now in terms of coaching and personnel, I don't see that happening. Hiring a competent offensive coordinator would be a good start. Overhauling the offensive line and bringing in a talented veteran WR would also help. Here's hoping Jerry Angelo is productive in those regards.

Finally, despite how bad this week was, the Bears are 4-5. They might get a Wild Card spot if they finish the season 5-2, which seems possible, although unlikely (PHI, @MN, STL, GB, @BAL, MN, @DET). There's still some hope left for this team, although it is fading fast.

The only problem with that is he forced the ball in Denver when he had a great offensive line, really good receivers and a very good running game. I think it's advanced now because the talent around him isn't as good, but that's always going to be part of who he is. Broncos fans complained about the red zone picks last year.

The last two years Denver averaged 4.6 and 4.8 yards per carry while he had Brandon Marshall and an o-line that gave him a ton of time.

Your biggest problem is even if you do manage a 5-2, you've already lost the tiebreaker with 5-3 Atlanta. The 49ers are now tied with you and have the tiebreaker. The Packers are .5 game ahead and won the first meeting. The Giants are 1 up. The Eagles are 5-3 so if you beat them there's still a shot but lose that game and it's basically over.

I'm not really seeing the hope because the teams that are ahead of the Bears are simply better than they are.

Lovie said last night "we're 4-5, we're a better team than that." Seriously, no they aren't. They are probably worse than 4-5, but early in the season teams weren't quite sure what the Bears were going to do. Now that the injuries have piled up and teams know exactly what we are going to run, we're probably more like a 3-6 team.

This team isn't going anywhere. They're not very good at the skill positions and that is compounded by the fact that the O-Line doesn't allow the few decent skill positions to actually become productive. Angelo has done a horrible of addressing the O-Line in recent years and it has cost them, whether it has been few draft picks (Williams and Beekman in't enough) or poor FA signings.

With their lack of good skill positions (DBs, WRs, etc.), they could sneak by some teams by how they won in the past by winning ugly. Now, since they get dominated on by sides of the line with well below avg. offensive and defensive line play, they don't have a chance.

I dislike this entire staff and wish they had the desire to cut their losses and go after this amazing crop of potential coaches/GMs to start over. Much like the Cubs of '07/'08, (especially with football) that '06 Bears window has long been closed and I don't trust this current group could get them near where they were a few years ago despite having done it once.

If the Bears trade Tommie Harris for picks in the offseason, what do you think they can get for him? Or can they trade him at his salary?

Maybe a 3rd, probably a 4th, and that would be difficult. He's got a roster bonus due to him early in the offseason that he may never see.
