There is an overwhelming amount of racism here in STL...

Oh yeah definitely, i forgot about St. Louis. No wonder they have like no black players on their roster.

Joe Thurston disagrees.

I'm not sure how the "It happens in other cities too" stuff matters. I don't read the article to indicate that this is a Chicago-only thing and I don't really see how the notion that it probably happens elsewhere makes it any more tolerable.

the cubs are one of the most racist fan-bases in the country. right up there with philly and boston. oddly enough, i don't associate many of the southern teams with racism, and i've been to plenty of games all of over the country. it sickens me sometimes to call myself a cub fan, but there's no way of getting around it.

do many other cities have racist fans? of course. but there are reasons why things have happened the way they have in the outfield over the years. if you're black, apparently, you should just strap on a smile like ernie banks and say you want to play two.

the one's ridiculing bradley for getting angry at racist cat-calls have no perspective at all in life and need to stop being cub fans. they're the ones who are the problem. i think i hear somebody getting angry over racism, somebody call the anger police so they can take care of it.

i've been to probably 50 phillies games in my life and never heard anything racist.

Philly fans hate everyone, so it's hard to tell.

when i lived in denver, i lived among a pocket of transplanted philadelphians. i think they were all racists and they pretty much acted like it wasn't a big deal. they weren't skinheads or anything, just dumbasses.

i think moving to denver made them racist.

fair enough, i'm just speaking form my perspective.

So you're in effect casually making a gross generalization of not just the entire Cubs fanbase, but the entire fanbases of two other major American cities. And wth no qualification other than your own opinion and your (unstated, but assumed) reaction from the media you've read/seen.

And then you go on to say that "you think" an entire group of transplanted Philadelphians you once met were racists, as well.

If you're becoming sick by being a Cubs fan, I suspect the nausea is more likely caused by paranoia rather than the veracity of your claims above.

We should trade for Wood. But to justify his salary, he also has to sort through the team mail and get rid of the racist letters. Two birds, one stone!

I still think we should try to trade Bradley and maybe Heilman for Wood.

Eric Wedge hates Milton Bradley. And Aaron Heilman should be non-tendered.

Eric Wedge doesn't manage the Indians. Manny Acta does.

Why does it matter Eric Wedge hates Bradley? I wouldnt think Cleveland would care what their fired manager thinks about a player......

gross generalization? that's a cop-out. anyone who says anything about anyone can be accused, it's a weak argument.

are you trying to piece together something here? because it kinda looks like you are and it kinda looks like you aren't.

But your argument was pretty weak. What do you base your argument on? Its your own experience you base it off, you have no data or anything to back up your argument. Racism is everywhere period, no city, team, etc is safe from it or excluded from that list. Like i've said before in my posts, i dont doubt there is racism in wrigleyfield but I haven't seen much of it. I actually lived in wrigleyville last year and didnt experience any racism acts. Chicago is a very diverse city, so when you go to cubs game you see a huge mixture of fans. To call a city one of the tops in racism from your supposed experience is a pretty weak argument because its a small sample size. If I wanted to, I can come out and say that Brewers fans are one of the most racist because of the three brewers games i went to last year, i heard multiple racial slurs. But unlike you i'm not going to because that was a small set of people that might not represent the majority. You call yourself a cubs fan but as a cubs fan its pretty insulting for you to come on here and label the majority of cubs fans racist when you're making an assumption off basically nothing.

Isn't racism based on personal perception anyways? Is there data that can prove how racist a team's fan base is? What other examples would you want him to give you?

He qualified all of his statements by saying that based on his personal experience the fans were more racist.

Looking at the only data we have: Wood said that the black players got racist mail in Chicago (interestingly he didn't say anything about Cleveland), Hawkins thought the fans were racist, Jones thought the fans were racist, Baker implied racism, Bradley complained about vague racism...maybe there is a pattern or maybe those guys were just a little too sensitive.

i never said that the majority of cubs fans are racist, that's absurd.

my ideas are my ideas, i have no stats to back them up, i have no set of data, i have only my experience. you can't go down to the library and look this crap up.

hah, the north side of chicago isn't exactly a haven of diversity.

Ummmm yes it is, the Lakeview area is diverse, so is wrigleyville, so is buena park, so is uptown, shall i go on. I'm Latino and I've lived on the North Side of Chicago all my life. You didnt say the majority but to say Chicago Cubs fans are one of the most Racist Fan bases, is basically implying that the majority is racist. And yes, there is Data on Racism, check polls, check surveys, etc. Just because certain ball players complained about the fans being racist doesn't make it so, especially when the best player and probably one of the most loved cubs, is black (Derek Lee). It is your opinion but to label a general population as racist is unfair and dumb. You can say they're racist because its true and its true about almost all fan bases regardless of ethinicity, whether you're talking about Latino Fan bases, Black Fan bases, etc, no fan base is excluded from racism. But yet come on here and label the Cubs fan base as one of the tops when it comes to racism.

I don't think starting with the theory that Chicago neighborhoods are heavily integrated is a good start.

It absolutely is not. If there are 10 racist baseball fans in all of baseball, and 3 are Cub fans, 2 are Angel fans, 2 are Red Sox fans, and the Reds, Marlins, and Nationals have 1 racist fan apiece, then yes the Cubs have the most racist fan base.

Just because certain ball players complained about the fans being racist doesn't make it so

Certainly doesn't help the case, especially when said players/manager have played elsewhere without dropping the race card

especially when the best player and probably one of the most loved cubs, is black (Derek Lee).

You don't see the connection between best player and most loved? There's a reason that it was important for Jackie Robinson to be a hell of a baseball player.

FTR, I agree that Cubs fans are probably some of the most racist(There's too many yuppies and old people to not be), but they're probably not the worst. I'd guess Boston and Philly are right up there and I know that White Sox fans can be horrible racists.
