All that defense carries the team stuff is fine and dandy but it is impossible for a defense to hold up when they are on the field constantly. The offense has to move the ball to let the defense rest. Not doing so skews the defenses ranks. The defense hasn't been what it used to be but thats to be expected. They lost the center piece of the defense. That is going to make the defense worse. If the offense could move the ball the defense would probably have respectable defense numbers bordering the top 10. Believe me I know all about this being a 49ers fan. The defense has had the skill to be very good for a couple seasons now but the offense continually having three and outs made it impossible for them to put up good numbers.

The defense actually got better as the game went along Sunday against the Jets. However, the offense wasn't able to run its gameplan because the special teams helped put it in a 14-0 hole before the offense stepped on the field. The offense didn't run a play until there were roughly 2 minutes left in the first quarter and the Titans were down by two touchdowns. That forced the offense to throw the ball more than it needs to and, thus, resulted in more 3-and-outs and turnovers than last year.

The offense will not be successful on its own, the talent is not there at quarterback and wide receiver for that to be the case. That's why the defense and special teams need to be solid and they have not been this season. The 49ers are a different case from the Titans because under Martz, the 49ers wanted to throw the ball. The Titans want to run it, but when they're down 14-0, they can't run it as much as they want.

By the way NFC West blogger Mike Sando added up the league leaders in runs for no gains or losses and Chris Johnson leads the league with 21 and has 39.6% of his runs result in a no gain or loss. It's somewhat related but more so just an interesting stat. Johnson will get yards but he will get them on one or two carries and not do much on the other 10-15 carries.

That's interesting, I didn't realize it. As good as Johnson is, though, he's still a "home run threat" type back who will have a lot of 0 yard runs and rushes for a loss because he shoots for that big gain. I would like to see them - and I'm sure Fisher and Heimerdinger want to - integrate LenDale into the offense more. He won't have the big runs CJ has, but he'll usually get some kind of yardage with each run.

However again, when we're playing from behind from the start of the game (Jets game) or when the defense is allowing huge gains (Houston game), LenDale's role becomes lessened.

Yeah the offenses are different. I was just pointing out that both defenses can't perform to their skill level because the offenses put them in tough situations.

Yeah, I'll agree that the offense could be doing more. But if the other two units are underperforming, the offense won't be able to turn things around.

If the special teams starts turning the ball over less now that Mark Jones is returning punts and kicks and if the secondary continues its improvement, I think you'll see the offense start to play better as well because it's in more positions to run what it's good at - short passes and running with CJ and LenDale.

i'm sure cincy @ cleveland and oakland @ houston will be terrific games.

hopefully the vikings lose and brett favre throws about 35 INTs in that game. i heard sao paolantonio on espn radio while driving home today - normally i like him - but this time i wanted to vomit. he was talking about it being the biggest mnf game in history and one of most memorable regular season games ever, how it's a storybook that a guy climbs off his tractor on a farm and tries to beat his old team (never mind that he has been playing continuously in the nfl for over 15 years; it's not like he retired to be a farmer for 5 years and then says "hey i want to go back into the league) and then said that favre's td pass to lewis is one of the most memorable plays in nfl history. give me a [expletive] break.

Yeah Sal, that's exactly what I think of when you tell me what a storybook is.

Found this ESPN poll interesting. Given the choice would you rather have a great offense or a great defense. Overall results as of now are 67% defense. The interesting part is that every state, and the rest of the world, voted a majority defense except Indiana.

It's sad to see Gus Johnson getting wasted on a Raiders-Texans game this week.

Good ol' Browns. James Harrison fumbles, Cincy takes it back for a TD to go up 14-0.

I knew there was a reason why I picked up Cincys D for this week lol

Titans down 14. Its almost time to restart the Vince Young experiment the way things are going for them.

If they lose this game (which it's certainly looking like they will), he needs to start the rest of the year. You're not going to learn anything with Kerry Collins starting over him for the rest of the season.

I was looking forward to my snarky comment about Derek Anderson but he put together two drives at the end to run his numbers to 8/16 for 130 yards, one yard coming on a TD pass.

So i got no halftime updates because New Orleans has a tornado warning going around Lake Pontchartrain. The worst part is that when they cut to the studio in New Orleans there was no sound for 20 seconds. When they finally got it turned on it was all messed up and having surges causing the audio to kick out from time to time. It is still going on even though they are showing the game now.
