Don't Cubs still have a game to make-up against the White Sox? What if the division race is so close that it Cubs have to play that game and face Peavy?

I know its not september but we could have potentially faced him again in mid august in San Diego

For the Padres, I'm just not enthused with this trade. 4 arms in any deal is a coup in it's own right, so it's not bad, but I feel like Poreda and Richard are both better off in the pen. Russell does little for me. Carter's interesting, though. That said, they had to make a move from the way it sounds.

A bit surprised this trade came back up with so little fanfare.

Couldnt we have easily have matched this deal?

sure, but why?

Exactly. Starting pitching is not a need for the Cubs right now. There's no point in making a move just to make a move. Sure, he's a big name and a great pitcher, but how would it really be worth it to pay him 56 million dollars when we already have a ton of high priced contracts? And if he never returns to form from this injury, that's another bloated contract that handcuffs the team from making worthwhile deals.

I love the comment from his agent though. The White Sox are obviously optimistic that Peavy can return this year and be effective. Honestly, this looks like a move for the future, and a way to get fans back into the stands since they're starting to not show up again. Plus, I think Kenny Williams is probably smirking right now knowing that he got Peavy when the Cubs went after him in the offseason and couldn't get it done.

Okay, okay, I'll shoot Jersey and Keener.

I was a mod before you, I get first dibs.

Here is how we would have had to match the deal (just matching similar pitchers/draft position/readiness):

(1) Andrew Cashner (Aaron Poreda)

(2) Jeff Stevens (Adam Russell)

(3) Jay Jackson (Dexter Carter)

(4) Tom Gorzelanny (Clayton Richard)

I wouldn't do that trade for Peavy in his condition with the money owed to him.

Only because Tim felt he had to since you've spent every waking minute of the past 6 years posting on NSBB.

This is a good move for the Sox, I respect the fact that Williams is one of the more aggressive GMs at this time of year and has the backing of their ownership group to make these types of deals even w/the fragile nature of expensive starting pitchers especially Peavy given the stress he puts on his arm.

Hopefully with the health of Quentin, they have the offense to get them into the playoffs. Jenks has to be a concern, but hopefully it was the kidney stones that caused him that discomfort. They probably needed one more bullpen arm to be safe.

I have nothing against them or most of their fans, I wish them well. On a personal level, I have a greater respect for their front office than the Cubs.

If they'd ditch Ozzie and change their marketing to boosting the Sox instead of trying to tear down the Cubs, I'd agree.

eta - oh yeah, and please put hawk out of our misery so I could enjoy watching the games, too.

I was a little more bearish than most on Peavy, and now he's hurt. I love this move for the Padres and hate it for the White Sox. Aaron Poreda isn't a bad bet to have a better season than Peavy in 2010.

True, Kenny Williams is definitely no stranger to making big trades or getting big name players.

Griffey last year, Peavy this year.

Tim, how could you not enjoy watching the Sox games. Listening to Hawk is a hoot....especially when they lose. He's so bitter and whiney. I get great joys from it. And I love how he's convinved the "Stone Pony" that the umps have it in for the Sox with regard to the strike zone. He complains all the time and Stoney has grown fond of agreeing with him!!

Sit back and try to enjoy. It's really easy and fun!!

haha no not at all, for the past 5 years Kenny has made big trades, whether it be out of the blue or long-speculated. It just seems like he's always out there making a phone call or acquiring a player or two around this time. Very agressive.

Some of the players he has acquired via trade since 2004:

Freddy Garcia

Jose Contreras

Matt Thornton

Gavin Floyd

Javier Vazquez

Orlando Cabrera

Carlos Quentin

Nick Swisher

Ken Griffey Jr.

Horacio Ramirez

Tony Pena

Jake Peavy

Sometimes I wonder what Ken Williams could do had he had Hendry's bankroll before the Soriano signing

Check out the payroll from the south side and you will notice that it's not too much different from the north side. I always crack up when people act like the WS are this semi-successful low-payroll team.

Some of his moves are good but a bunch are obviously just moves for the sake of making moves. My initial response was mostly referring to you singling out the Griffey trade as a good one when it's essentially the epitome of making a move simply because the deadline is near.
