They're falling out of contention. They probably cannot afford to keep Halladay when they owe outfielders Vernon Wells and Alex Rios approximately $160 million combined from 2010 to '14. And they know that Halladay would prefer to pitch for a winner anyway when he becomes a free agent after next season.

Bummer that you can't afford Halladay because of two OF hitting like those two.

Colorado should try and get him. I know there has been some indications around here that the Rox front office might actually be buyers this year. Give them Seth Smith and some other top prospects could get it done.

Ken Rosenthal sees the Brewers and Phillies as the best fits for him. If Melvin isnt willing to give up Gamel or Escobar for Halladay, hes an idiot. Theyed probably have to give up Gamel or Escobar, Hart or Hardy, and Parra.

Brewers with Roy Halladay would be scary but still not scary enough for me to just hand them the division.

I'd love for them to throw away some of their great prospects for what a year and half of Roy Halladay? I like Halladay as much as the next guy but he's already 32 and has had a lot of wear and tear on that shoulder. If they keep throwing prospects at rentals we'll never have to worry about them again.

If they throw enough prospects at 30+ players, they'll be us.

Luckily we can expend payroll to keep these 30+ players around forever (good and bad)

plus our 'prospects' usually suck

Seriously? If Seth Smith was good, he'd start for the Rockies, not be a 5th OFer. I don't know anything about the Rockies system, but it would have to be pretty good to get 18 months of Halladay.

I think the Brewers would have to give up Gamel, Escobar, AND additional prospects to get in the Halladay discussion. He's worth much more than CC was last year because Halladay has 1.5 seasons and everyone knew CC was going for the big money to the west or east coast after the season.

Yeah but we already know the big money that Halladay is going to get next year. He's owed 16 million for 2010...can the Brewers even add that to their payroll?

I don't know anything about the Rockies

That's obvious.

The only reason Smith doesnt start in LF is because the dummies in the front office feel they have to at least try and play Carlos Gonzalez, who they got in the Holliday trade. Everyone around here knows what is up and is sick of it. They dont understand why the Rox won't put their best players in the field. Cargo is abysmal. Smith on the other hand, is not.

.284/.400/.482, 121 AB's, 6 HR, 6 2B, 2 3B, 20 RBI, 28 walks.

thats not bad at all given the limited AB's.

You're right. Instead of trying to win, they're trying to prove that they won the Matt Holliday trade.

you're missing the point. he just wants you to say, "hey seth smith went to ole miss. didn't YOU go to ole miss too???"

Thread/article title is misleading, Rosenthal is basing his assumption purely on a few select quotes that don't suggest Halladay is gone at all:

http://www.drunkjaysfans.com/

""We have to see what's out there," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi says. "I'm not saying we're going to shop him. But if something makes sense, we at least have to listen. We're (leaning) more toward listening than we've ever been."

There’s the money quote from the latest effort from an American writer to explode a tiny kernel of possibility acknowledged by JP Ricciardi that the Jays might consider maybe considering listening to an offer on Roy Halladay if they get an offer that makes sense—this time from that [expletive] Oompa-Loompa, Kenny Ken Kenneth Ken Kenny Rosenthal—into full-blown Halladay-on-the-block hysteria."

This. If they want to give up their top prospect and one of their everyday players like Hart or Hardy then let them. I'm not a big fan of trading quality everyday players for someone who plays once every five days. Although Halladay is one of the best pitchers in baseball, he can't really do any better for them than Sabathia did last year and we still came away with the division.

nice burn abuck. but anyways, the smith v. cargo thing is one of the bigger issues that fans have with the current rockies leadership right now (and they could care less about where he went to school). you see plenty of "free smith" signs in coors and the boos that Cargo gets would make bonds feel bad.

but that is all irrelevant to you because the only thing that matters to you is to mock people on this board. so keep it up, you're doing a great job.

Seth Smith?

Seriously? He's almost 27 now. He's a nice platoon or a 4th outfielder, but I'd say he probably isn't anything more than that. Of his career 301 major league plate appearances, 29 of those have been against a LHP.

While I completely agree that the Rockies front office is an absolute mess and while it is possible that Smith could be something more than a 4th outfielder, Toronto should be shooting for something a bit more enticing than a 27 year old "prospect" for Roy Halladay.

Melvin just recently said that Gamel and Escobar were untouchable. There is zero chance the Brewers can get a deal done without including at least one of those two. Corey Hart and J.J Hardy have seen their value plummet.
