Contract length and total value wise, perhaps.

 

But I have to agree with the nominations of Todd "Flipping the Bird" Hundley and Mel Rojas are worse free agent signing.

 

I would also nominate the group signing of Randy Myers, Jose Bautista, Dan Plesac, and Candy Maldonado for the money saved by not re-signing Maddux. None of those players stayed in Chicago for more then 3 yrs, and only Myers was remotely productive during their stay with the Cubs.

impossible, neither were signed by the Jimmy Carter of Baseball GMs

Honorable mention: Jose Guzman, Todd Hundley, Jeff Blauser, Gary Gaetti (after we resigned him the second time)

I'd put Moises Alou on my list. He was lights out with the Astros, signed with the Cubs, and had two crap years (compared to expectations). He got in his contract year ('04) and was awesome again. I hated that guy's attitude, too. . . . .it was never his fault. . . .always griping about something.

Here's my list.

 

Dave Smith. Had served as a pretty good closer for the Astros, but the Cubs paid too much for saves and failed to realize that while a fly ball pitcher in the Astrodome is not a bad thing, a fly ball closer at Wrigley is a very bad thing. He gave up 6 HR in 33 IP in his first season and only pitched 14 innings in his second season.

 

Danny Jackson. After posting a 3.61 ERA for the Reds in 1990, the Cubs made him a lucrative contract offer. He rewarded Cub fans with a 6.75 ERA in 1991. Mid-way through the 92 season, the Cubs unloaded him for Steve Buechele.

 

Gary Gaetti. The Cubs acquired Gaetti for the 1998 playoff push and Gaetti posted a wonderful 320/397/594 line. The Cubs then decided that he deserved an encore and signed him as FA. The 40-yr-old Gaetti showed his gratitude by hitting 204/260/339 in 1999.

 

Todd Hundley. Even if the mercurial Hundley wasn't such an ass, he responded to the Cubs FA contract by hitting 187/268/374 in his first season in Chicago and then followed it up with 211/301/421 in his second season. Hey, at least it was improvement. I looked up "Sucking ass" in the dictionary and there was a picture of Todd giving me the finger.

 

Neifi Perez. After Neifi saved the Cubs in 2005, Jim Hendry responded by giving him a 2 yr 5 million dollar contract. Thankfully, Detroit took him off our hands by giving the Cubs the uberprospect Chris Robinson.

 

Dusty Baker. Do I really need to explain this one. If I do, well it's a lot like fishing....

 

Mel Rojas. Rojas signed to be the Cubs closer. He didn't last a season in that role.

 

Jeff Blauser. This Cub-killer was supposed to solidify SS for the Cubs. He was all kinds of suck for the Cubs. I almost told him so once.

 

Willie Wilson. Imagine if you will signing Juan Pierre after Pierre is no longer fast, can no longer steal bases, and can no longer beat out infield singles. The Cubs did this. It was a 37-yr old Willie Wilson. He was suck personified.
