Created a few games over at jawdle to illustrate Purdue's place in the big 10. :D

I don't get it? What does that say about Purdue in the Big Ten?

I'll create a table that illustrates Purdue's place in the Big Ten.

Big Ten Titles

Chicago* 6 1924

Illinois 17 2005

Indiana 20 2002

Iowa 8 1979

Michigan 12 1986

Michigan State 11 2009

Minnesota 9 1982

Northwestern 2 1933

Ohio State 17 2007

Penn State 0 ---

Purdue 21 1996

Wisconsin 17 2008

CubbieBum was trying to insist that IU and Purdue were head and shoulders over everyone else for program history.

They're not.

I'm pretty sure I never said they were head and shoulders above everyone else. All I said was they are historically the two best and that is a fact based on the table above. Historically means you take all years into account. Some didn't take it that way and that was why it turned into an argument. If you want to say Purdue has been mediocre in the 2000's I have no problem with that. They have been down for the last decade.

No because other things like National Championships have to be taken into account and IU's one less Big Ten title doesn't out weigh the difference in titles.

michigan state is the class of the big ten, michigan has a modern national title and more final fours (even without the deleted ones), illinois has more final four and elite 8 appearances, ditto for ohio state, who also has a national title.

i mean, purdue is nothing special in the least bit. they're middle of the pack at best.

Jerry Wainwright is apparently out as DePaul coach.

Not to put too much pressure on Jean Lenti Ponsetto, but this next coach selection will likely decide the fate of the DePaul athletic program. Their contract with the Big East ends with the 2014-2015 season and if they continue to be putrid, they will likely get kicked out and replaced, likely ending in the Atlantic 10 or Horizon League, likely costing the university millions in revenue and likely eliminating more sports from their already pretty thin athletic program budget.

Kudos to her for finally standing up for the tradition of the program and ending this clown's reign. Now hopefully some alumni will pony up some money for a real coach because the money wasn't even there to buy him out last year even though she tried.

When did they try to buy him out? I didn't read about that. They actually extended him last January until 2012.

I'm pretty happy that this happened, but you are right, the program is at a crossroads. They claim that money isn't an object in finding a long term coach, and I hope that is true. DePaul basketball can succeed even with a small fan base, dilapidated facilities, and non existence in it's media market. The Big East is full of programs that deal with the exact same factors DePaul has (Marquette, Villanova, Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall, even Georgetown). They need to figure out how they want to build their program, and once they do that, go out and find the best possible coach for that situation.

Personally, if I had a choice, I would contact Brian Gregory from Dayton and see if he's interested in coming to DePaul. It's arguable that DePaul is a more prominent program than Dayton at this time, but there are advantages to the DePaul job. He's done a good job of recruiting his share of top prospects from the area (such as Chris Wright).

Another name that keeps popping up that makes me laugh is none other than Dave Leito. I'm still pissed he left the program in shambles after some good years, and now he's out of a job and would probably consider DePaul again.

The last 10 years, and 40 years from the dawn of the 40's to the end of the 70's. So, what, about 15 years of moderate success out of the last 70?

Congratulations, I guess.

And yet 21 Big Ten titles still. 13 years without winning one and nobody else has caught up yet. Now they are among the nations elite and everybody wants to talk trash about the past.

Purdue's record vs every Big Ten team.

* Illinois: 88–85

* Indiana: 109–84

* Iowa: 82–70

* Michigan: 81–62

* Michigan State: 63–45

* Minnesota: 94–78

* Northwestern: 119–43

* Ohio State: 82–81

* Penn State: 21–11

* Wisconsin: 104–62

Not a single losing record in the bunch and that is after a decade of mediocrity.

Purdue isn't even the best team in the Big Ten this season.

Nobody's saying Purdue is a garbage program, they're saying Bum is a raving lunatic who is choosing one stat that happens to support Purdue to try and put them up on a pedestal above other programs that are equal or better than them.

That remains to be seen.

It'll be a good test for UK against UF tonight in Gainesville. UK played decent vs. UGA but not as well as they should've but UK has been able to pull out some games they could've lost.

16-0 is still 16-0.

and yet, they have one less final four appearance than iowa.

For all the talk around here about the MLB playoffs being a crap shoot why isn't the NCAA tourney viewed the same way? Teams get hot at the right time and make a nice run. Unfortunatel,y Purdue has not had success in that manner. However, they have been able to endure and triumph through a very tough conference season 21 times. That cannot be dismissed just because of the lack of their tournament success.

It's been my experience that people (not just here, but any fan I talk to) really only use tournament success or failure when it suits their argument, whether it be pumping one team up, discounting another, trying to prove conference supremacy, or something similar.

no, i'm not trying to suit an argument, i'm just pointing out that a program like mighty iowa has more final fours than the powerhouse boilermakers, who clearly, along with IU, make up the top-tier of the big ten. i mean, to the point where it would be grossly and terribly unfair to put them in the same division if the conference were expanded.

Oh, I'm with you. Purdue's not even close to the top tier of the Big 11 historically. That was more of a general observation.
