Is Elston undersized? IU's strategy seemed to be to get physical with our bigs, which is why I assumed Capobianco started. This doesn't explain previous games, but that seems to be the prevailing thought on Illinois boards.

He's 6-foot-8. He has basically been used exclusively as Watford's backup. Against Illinois it probably would have been difficult to play Elston and Watford together, but that's not true most games (Illinois is pretty tall and skilled inside). I think "getting physical" was definitely the strategy.

Oh, and Illinois was pretty stupid not to throw the ball down low even more than they did.

This means Texas will probably lose this week. They have never liked being #1 for more than a week the few times it has happened this decade. UConn is two weeks away so it could happen then.

Saturday 1/16 works for me.

It won't be on Wednesday.

Yep, and I will be in Austin for it too :-). Luckily Texas is pretty good at home.

My goodness we needed that one. Apparently it took a 17 point deficit to get this team to remember how to play basketball. The 2nd half was by far the best the defense has looked in about 3-4 weeks.

Big, big win. Crawford made some rookie mistakes, but he showed today that he really can be something special down the line.

Yeah, the 5 turnovers weren't attractive, but the guy has already had about 5 huge games. Not bad for a true freshman.

We're going to face a Leuer-less Wisconsin on Wednesday. He's out indefinitely with a wrist injury, for which he'll undergo surgery tomorrow.

Oh man, just saw Leuer is out indefinitely. That sucks. Plague of serious injuries for Big Ten teams so far this year.

That's huge... first conference game in Evanston since classes resumed coming off of a big win -- upset alert? :D

What the hell is up with the Pac-10.

Washington has lost 3 in a row. Oregon started off 2-0 and lost to OREGON STATE...you know, the team that lost by 50 to Seattle at home. I love hearing Pac-10 announcers continuing to call it parity. The conference is utter crap.

If their strategy was to get physical (and I agree it was), then Elston again still seems like a wiser choice than Pritchard in that regard. I just don't get it. I'm trying to give Crean the benefit of the doubt here and assume that there is something going on in practice or whatever that's leading him to believe that Pritchard is a better choice than Elston. It's not like Pritchard has a big size advantage on Elston. They are both listed at 6-9 and Elston certainly seems to be able to use his size more effectively than Pritchard from what I've seen (even though Pritchard has about 25 lbs on him).

Illini should be able to get to 4-0 in the Big Ten this week before the hammer drops starting over the weekend. PSU at home, hopefully with a better result than 38-33 with no free throw attempts.

For those not paying attention, that makes Illinois' opening BT schedule: NW at home, Iowa at home, at Indiana, PSU at home. After a trip to Purdue and a visit from MSU, it's: at NW, at PSU, home vs. Indiana, at Iowa. So, there's potential for an 8-2 start in conference.

After that, they may not win another game.

The Purdue game is home and MSU away, but yeah, that schedule is weird. I think if they can get to 8-2, they can get to 10 wins for sure by beating Michigan and Minnesota. If Luers is out for an extended period, I like our chances against Bucky at the Hall. I think they can get 1 of the 4 against MSU or Purdue as well, but they may have to because I have no doubt they'll give one away that they shouldn't.

Our schedule is pretty much the opposite of Northwestern's. They have a brutal 1st half, but play nobody down the stretch. They could easily start 2-7 and finish in the top half the Big Ten

Well, to be fair, crappy parity is still parity.

I still think Cal is by far the best team in the conference, but yeah, yeesh.

I'm with you. I'm trying to convince myself it's something in practice or off the court. Because, if it's not, and Crean actually believes Pritchard/Capobianco are better basketball options than Elston, well, then I'm even more concerned about things than I thought I was.

Oh, nobody is final four material, for sure, but I thought going into the conference that Cal would win.

Although, for comic value, it'd be best if USC won the conference and the tournament while being banned from postseason play.

No, I was commenting more on your "by far the best team" statement. No one has done anything to set themselves ahead of the other teams.

UCLA had a good opportunity to jump ahead in the standings if they won an extremely winnable game at Stanford on Saturday. Meh.

If Juice doesn't die by then. He's playing 38 min/game and I'm concerned he's going to run out of gas after playing all of these tough teams.

Created a few games over at jawdle to illustrate Purdue's place in the big 10. :D

I don't get it? What does that say about Purdue in the Big Ten?

I'll create a table that illustrates Purdue's place in the Big Ten.

CubbieBum was trying to insist that IU and Purdue were head and shoulders over everyone else for program history.

They're not.

You know, without order, you might as well call all those puzzles "Name all the teams in the Big Ten" ;)

crap...I thought I had them set up to name them in order. :(

that explains how you got it in 13 seconds, though.

Perhaps you didn't realize that Purdue has Robbie Humell.
