Lucky. NU shot really well, but this game proved that if you pound the ball inside good things will happen.

With two teams scoring in the eighties does this mean Big Ten Basketball is exciting again?

Uh, NU shot horribly. 28 of 84 from the floor for 33% and 34% from beyond the arc. Illinois was the team that shot 50%.

That was easily one of the worst performances since the beginning of last year. Just terrible. Maybe 2nd only to the game at Minnesota last year. They had no idea how to run the offense and the defense was an open gate. No idea how they stayed in the game.

they lived by chucking and died by chucking. it will happen a lot to them.

1-0 in the Big East, nine more for a shot at the tourney after a nice win over Providence tonight. Unfortunately, next we get a pissed-off UConn at their place. Say hello, beatdown.

I think NW is legit. If they had a healthy Coble this year, I'm not sure they aren't the 2nd best team in the Big Ten.

You think they're better than Michigan State?*

but losing to a chucking intramural team ON OUR HOME COURT wouldn't surprise me.

i'm not impressed with northwestern at all, and i'm even less impressed with the defensive intensity the illini are showing. get a hand in their face, they can't put the ball on the florr or do anything else except shoot and foul. a high school team could beat these guys.

It's Bruce Weber's MO to lose to crappy teams on our home court. I am growing tired of this [expletive] even with the upturn in recruiting

Me too. Me too.

Our defense is so bad. Davis is awful at defense. Every team runs the pick off of his guy. His man picks and he doesn't hedge the screen or stay with his man. He creates the majority of the open looks the other team gets. Yet Weber usually pulls the guard to yell at them.

From what I've seen so far, this is how I think the Big Ten will shake out this year:

1. Purdue

2. Michigan State

3. Wisconsin

4. Minnesota

5. Ohio State (would be higher if Turner were around the whole year, probably #2)

6. Northwestern

7. Illinois

8. Michigan

9. Penn State

10. Indiana

11. Iowa

That's probably exactly what I expect. Ohio State was an easy third -- maybe even second -- with Turner. I've been disappointed in Illinois (not that this board needs a reminder). Thought they'd be better. Michigan obviously hasn't looked so hot. Indiana I still think will finish ahead of Iowa, but losing Creek is a devastating blow.

Oh, and people picking Wisconsin to finish ninth in the league were either morons or insane (or both). Seriously. I didn't think they'd be a top-3 or -4 team, but ninth? C'mon.

Really, Illinois is disappointing defensively, for the most part, which can be fixed. If Weber can get the freshmen to buy into the perimeter defense for an entire game, Illinois is really dangerous.

I think Ohio State will finish 3rd or 4th with Wisconsin depending on how much Turner plays and Illinois will finish 5th. Also Michigan will finish ahead of Northwestern. So that would be

2. Michigan State

3. Wisconsin

Ohio State

5. Illinois

6. Minnesota

7. Michigan

8. Northwestern

I like Northwestern and will root for them to get in the tourney but teams who rely almost solely on three's don't tend to do well in the Big Ten. Their inability to guard the post was shown last night with Tisdale getting 31 and 12 (IIRC) and Mike Davis doing whatever he wanted in OT. Any team with a decent post player will just post them up offensively and guard the perimeter defensively.

I didn't look at the stats but NU was draining from three in the first half. The aggregate effect of all those three's falling was quite frustrating.

NW shot 11-23 in the first half from 3, which is like shooting 72% from inside the arc. it's pretty easy to tell how they stayed in the game. the chuckers were hot.

if you have to play like an underdog, you are an underdog.

IU is probably just being a tease but a 34-28 halftime lead is nice. I really, really hope they can finish this and get a Big Ten win in the opener! :beg:

Illini fans, help me out here. Was Verdell Jones expected to be this productive a college player? I realize Illinois had other needs, but he has certainly exceeded my early expectations for him.

Verdell isn't as good as any of the 3 guards that are freshmen for us this year. He's had a good game, but he's really not that great of a player. (yet, still has serious TO concerns and isn't enough of a shooter to make up for it) He's benefited greatly from the playing time he's been able to get. He absolutely made the right call(which I critiqued at the time) because he wouldn't have gotten the game experience at Minnesota that he's received at IU

Way to go Crean & Crimson! \:D/

I'll go way out on a limb and predict that they will at least double their Big 11 win total over a year ago. :D
