Illini fans, help me out here. Was Verdell Jones expected to be this productive a college player? I realize Illinois had other needs, but he has certainly exceeded my early expectations for him.

illinois barely recruited him or lewjack. he was okay, but the class behind them was full of players that they wanted. jones would be buried on a good team. he made the right decision and indiana got a serviceable player until they can refill the cupboard.

Alex Legion has chosen his next school and it is..........Florida International.

"I am very excited, encouraged and humbled to have the opportunity to play for and learn the professional game of basketball from Coach Isiah Thomas, an NBA great and legend.

"Coach Thomas has drafted great talent into the NBA and Coach Thomas is a great developer of young NBA talent including players like Jermaine O'Neal, Brad Miller, David Lee, Wilson Chandler, and Jamal Crawford. I am hopeful and optimistic for similar outcomes for me."

yeah isiah thomas, the guy who ran a basketball league that had existed for over 50 years and ran it into the ground within a year or two, turned a very good pacers team into a squad that got eliminated from the playoffs in the first round every year, then went to coach the knicks through some of the worst years in franchise history while dealing away all their draft picks and causing his employers to pay out one of the largest sexual harassment penalties in history. sounds like a guy i'd want to be around.

That kid needs better people around him. The choice here was to go to a NCAA D2 school and play right away. He's only gonna have what, one semester left to play now?

If he sits for just a year, then yeah, he gets one semester. If he sits for 3 semesters, he'll get a full year.

Yeah but I see no way he sits for 3 semesters. His famiy has stated time and again the goal is for him to play pro ball. That's pretty much what 5 years and about 31 games for him since high school?

he ain't playing pro ball.

He will play some form of pro ball. Probably lower level overseas.

i dont know how a league that would pay him to play could exist. is he in the top 300 of all college players? 500? he's not even a good wide open shooter.

During the summer he played overseas and did very well with one of the traveling teams. A couple of teams allegedly offered him deals then. I think there is a mental block there somewhere.

Kelsey Barlow is really starting to develop (decision making, passing, etc.), compared to the first couple games of the season. Obviously he's far from being a top notch player, but you can see moments.

This game is making me feel a lot better after getting down big against Alabama and struggling against Iowa in the first half.

I cannot believe he's not going D2. This is a terrible decision. I really liked Alex too, this is sad.

Anyone know if/when Lewis Jackson will be back this year?

Possibly end of February. The question will probably be will they need him more during the month of March than an entire extra season via a medical red shirt. I think he'll be back by tournament time unless the team is playing so well there won't be any minutes for him.

yikes tennessee

Four Tennessee basketball players, including starting senior forward Tyler Smith, were charged with gun possession and other counts after a Friday traffic stop.

The Knoxville Police Department said Smith, 23, junior point guard Melvin Goins, 22, junior center Brian Williams, 22, and sophomore guard Cameron Tatum, 21, were arrested during a traffic stop for speeding near Tennessee's campus.

According to a police report, officers smelled marijuana coming from the car and found a handgun with an altered serial number, a bag of marijuana and an open container of alcohol. Tatum was driving.

Officers could not determine whether any of the players were under the influence of marijuana, though the strong odor suggested marijuana had recently been smoked in the car, the police report said.

Tatum was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and having an open container of alcohol. Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, which is a felony. Goins and Williams both face gun and drug possession charges.
