gameday says it's blowing 16mph south. I'm not sure if that means from the north to the south, or from the south to the north?

Yahoo says 14mph, out to center.

I never would have dreamed that Theriot would have a multi-homer game!

It's been blowing either straight out or out to left center. All 4 of the Cubs homers (and both of Gonzalez's) have gone out that direction

He actually had a previous multi homer game back in 2006.

Edit: Here is the game. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200609170.shtml

Eric Milton + wind blowing way out = 6 HRs for the Cubs that day.

Gameday made both of Theriot's look like first row/basket jobs. Was this the case?

First one was 1st or 2nd row, but just left of the batter's eye. I didn't see the 2nd one

Seriously, where did Theriot get this power from? 1 homerun all of last year and now 5 in his first 130 or so at bats.

It probably has at least a little to do with his approach. He was so effective going the other way into right field with those singles, thats what the Cubs asked him to do. I guess it was his best way to help the team.

The Cubs asked him to be a .745 OPS player instead of a .844 OPS player?

I say let's see what develops with him. I mean, we need this unexpected power source until we get the team healthy (esp. Aram) and some others back on track (hopefully Lee and Soto).

Basically, when pitchers pitch to him, they are looking for teh fly ball out to avoid his specialty single down the first base line, so hes expecting that these days and puts more of a jolt into it. Its Sneaky power I tell ya.

...didn't get to watch the game last night, but it was obvious that there were going to be some homeruns considering the strength and direction of the wind. It sounds like both of Theriot's HRs would have been fly outs on a normal day. I wouldn't get overly optimistic about Theriot's recent power surge. Let's just be grateful that those two wind aided shots last night helped us get a W.

I'm actually more interested in Soto's HR and the fact that he had 2 hits. It would be nice for him to get things going.

I didn't see the game last night. When I saw the box score this morning, I laughed about Theriot, and got pumped about Soto...so yeah, I'm in the same boat.

Agreed, and for the month of May, Soto is hitting around .300. I know its a small sample, but so was April.

This isn't really a power development. He has figured out that he can put balls in the basket at Wrigley. When he hits a home run somewhere else (Houston doesn't count) let me know.

http://deadspin.com/5256577/rick-telander-defends-ryan-theriot-against-rick-telanders-steroid-accusations-all-hell-breaks-loose

Here, courtesy of Rick Telander and his colleagues in the Chicago sports media, is a nice little primer on how to whip up a good old-fashioned hysteria out of nothing whatsoever.

Follow the bouncing ball: In his column today, Rick Telander defends wee Chicago Cub Ryan Theriot against totally nonexistent suspicions of 'roiding, just so he can mewl inanely about a culture ("this is what baseball has wrought") in which even wee Ryan Theriot is a suspect, even though wee Ryan Theriot wasn't a suspect until Rick Telander said he was. And then the bloodhounds in the Chicago sporting press have to go and ask Theriot about being a suspect, which he wasn't until Rick Telander said he was. And then Theriot has to deny everything and pronounce himself "disappointed" with the column, which of course just makes him look all the more suspicious, something he wasn't until Rick Telander said he was.
