Pitching Prospect of the Day: Alberto Cabrera, RHP, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 8.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 13 K; plus-plus fastball with life; potential solid-average slider; potential average changeup. The problem with Cabrera is that he has been very inconsistent in his minor league career. Cabrera has performed well thus far in 2013 and will hope to stay as a starter moving forward; 91.2 IP, 88 H, 36 ER, 34 BB, 94 K in 15 starts.

Getting your fourth crack at a league you are several years too old for does wonders.

george springer is a year older than cabrera and played most of this season at AA (just called up to AAA). somehow he's a top 50 prospect but cabrera is "several years too old" for the league.

Springer is a year younger than Cabrera, not a year older.

where did he come from

Signed in 2005 out of the Dominican Republic. Came up through the DSL and was used mostly as a starter to OK results. Switched to BP last year, threw about 20ish innings for the Cubs in the majors to crap results. Despite hitting Iowa last year as a reliever he was sent back down to Tennessee this season and is now working as a starter again to arguably the best results of his career.

where did he come from

He was a starter for the first 6 seasons of his minor league career but struggled despite having a good FB and a nasty slider when it was on.

The Cubs converted him to a reliever last year, and he did very well in the minors (4-1, 3.11, 74 Ks against only 14 BB) but struggled with wildness when called up. Outside of the walks, his peripherals in Chicago were quite good (6.6 hits per 9 and 11.2 Ks per 9). So Theo and Co. decided to give him one last go as a starter, and this season has been his best so far.

He's 24. If he continues to pitch like he has in June, he should see time in AAA in the 2nd half. Depending on how he does in the PCL, he will be given a shot to win the 5th starter spot next year in spring training. Still a ways to go, but so far, the decision to move him back to starter is paying off.

Baseball America has a story about Jacob Hannamann and his pre-draft workout for the Cubs. Subscription required. Can anyone paraphrase? Thanks

It's a Phil Rogers article that says very little.

all you had to say was "phil rogers article" - the rest of that sentence is implied.

Fluff piece on Blackburn

One big difference, he noted, comes directly from the weight room. A first-round pick in the 2012 Draft (56th overall) out of Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., the 6-foot-8 righty weighed in at a modest 160 pounds. Having spent the last three months in extended spring training, he's put on about 30 pounds and wants to get to an even 200 before it's all said and done.

On top of that, Blackburn is never satisfied by simply "pitching well," as he puts it. There's a continuous drive for consistency and improvement, motivation rarely found in teenage athletes.

"If I go out and throw seven innings, allow one hit and walk a guy, it's a great outing, but I'm not as happy as I would be if I went out there, didn't give up a hit and didn't walk anyone," he said. "One of the biggest things to me is just finding a way to keep the team in the ballgame to get a win."

Hawks coach Gary Van Tol has been impressed with Blackburn's composure and attention to detail. Even when he's not pitching, he's studying the game and coming to an understanding of how quickly fortunes can change in baseball.

Though Blackburn is sure to allow an earned run soon, he's certainly set the bar high for himself.

"He goes right after guys, he's pitching to contact, and he's throwing inside," Van Tol said. "Paul has shown some veteran composure out there by going him after hitters with no fear."

As he continues the pursuit of his dream, Blackburn has made it clear that turning around is not an option. The would-be business major instead has his sights set on working in Chicago, but at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, as opposed to corporate America.

"Wrigley Field is a great atmosphere. … That's just a great feeling to know that in the future I could be there," he said. "I was going to see where business took me, but as of right now, I haven't really had to think about it."

BA Chat

Jeff (California): Is Arismendy Alcantara the Cubs Second Baseman after the All-Star game next year? And is he a viable lead-off option in the future?

Jim Shonerd: At the earliest, and he hasn’t exactly mastered Double-A yet. He didn’t look like a leadoff guy coming into the year, but he’s showing a lot more patience (his 32 walks are already a career high), so you could see him in a leadoff role, though he’s been hitting second or third with Tennessee.

Jeff (California): Is Alberto Cabrera more of a back-end guy or might he be a mid-rotation candidate?

Jim Shonerd: He can be more than a No. 4 or 5 guy. It’s a power arm and he’s shown effective secondary stuff enough to believe he can be a quality big league starter.

cocoa (new zealand): thanks Jim, Dan Vogelbach looks like one of the sweetest pure hitters I've seen in a long time. do you think his bat can carry him to the majors, and do you see him being a great hitter in the majors, maybe a .300+ avg hitter, maybe another prince fielder? Thanks

Jim Shonerd: .300 might be a stretch, but he’ll be more than a one-dimensional power hitter. He doesn’t just swing for the downs and will use the whole field, so he should be able to hit for solid averages, not to mention his patience that leads to walks.
