Vogelbach needs to show some usable power in games for me to think he can stick at the major leagues at all. I think he will, but with even that still in the air, and him being 2+ years away, I can't think it's anything but really really unlikely he's a better pro than Rizzo at this point.

And this is without taking into account the just enormous chasm between their defensive abilities.

One of the specialists determined that Olt's right eye wasn't producing tears necessary to lubricate and clear the eye. Drops were prescribed, and Olt immediately began to see and feel better. He returned to Double-A Frisco on May 31 and homered in his first game. He got three hits in his first game back at Round Rock.

"When I first came back," Olt said, "I'd had the special drops, and for the first time I felt like I was back to my old self. It kind of gave me peace of mind — it's OK, there's a way to get past this.'

Olt hit .255 with seven homers in June, pushing his average above .200. Then came a break, a rare chance to study the art of hitting. The Rangers signed Manny Ramirez, who came to Round Rock to begin a comeback attempt.

"He was awesome," Olt said. "He walks out of his car with a bat and he never puts the bat down, always a bat in his hand. Unbelievable. We worked on my timing. I talked to him about how he approaches certain pitchers, what he looks for. I'm a No. 3 or 4 hitter, a power guy, and I wanted to know what he thinks, what he picks up on certain guys. He was right on with everything he said, even when he'd never seen the guy before."

With Olt hitting again, the rumors restarted as another trade deadline approached. The Rangers were looking for pitching, and talking to the Cubs about Matt Garza. Cubs GM Theo Epstein and his scouts, while with the Red Sox, had thoroughly evaluated Olt going into the 2010 draft and made certain that he was included in the deal on July 22.

"A year ago at this time, he was one of the higher-regarded minor league prospects in the game and it would've been hard to acquire him," said Jason McLeod, the Cubs senior vice president for scouting and player development. "It was a tough year [for Olt], no doubt, from a performance standpoint, the average was down and the strikeouts went up from last season. He still exhibits the athleticism, power and defensive ability we saw previously."

Olt moved to the Iowa Cubs in the same league, the PCL, with the goal of a September call-up to Chicago. But there were more complications; the drops that Olt had been taking cannot be used long-term, because of the risk of serious side effects, such as glaucoma, and he had to stop. In August, Olt said, he again had problems seeing, and he hit .176 in the final six weeks.

"And now we've got to find a way to fix the problem without using the drops," Olt said.

Returning home after the season ended on Labor Day, Olt has gone to see more eye specialists, including one in Boston last week recommended by Epstein.

"We are going to explore all avenues to put him in the best position to succeed," McLeod said. "We remain hopeful that the vision issues can be corrected this offseason and he can come to spring training ready to go full speed."

I feel like lots of people ignore this part. It's understood he'll never be a good fielder and may not even be able to play a position. And his SLG was 450 this year. He hit 19 HR.

If he was a decent athlete who could be counted on to play 1B at an average or better level, I'd be more excited. But he has a long ways to go and has to show more than he has at the upper levels.

It seems kind of reckless to put someone who can't see properly in the batter's box.

I would bet the average Joe probably would hardly notice a difference in vision with the issue he has. I'm sure it's just the fine detail of spin on the ball he can't see and not to the point he doesn't know where the ball is and can't get out of the way.

I think it's worse than that. This is career threatening. Dude needs some stem cell therapy or magic cure.

Hmm, can't take this as good news, but kind of glad to hear he had a legit excuse for his play with us as well. Olt isn't a true necessity for us, but if he gets the help he needs Texas is REALLY going to regret that deal.

Don't see the problem. Take the drops. Have a 10 year baseball career making tons of money. Get prescribed to legally smoke weed the rest of your life.

Sucking for a reason that corresponds with an issue and has shown signs of being corrected >>>>>>>>>>> sucking for indeterminate or completely uncorrectable reasons.

Stunningly accurate and similar comparison, really. I guess the crushing fist of logic comes along with the limp, sweaty handshake of dumbassery.

I don't know how we'll find room for him at 3b now that we have Ian Stewart, who turned out just fine after his wrist was fixed.

If this is your attempt to bring a new negative shtick, try again. It was awful.

This is how I imagine Kyle after he successfully trolls bats all of you:

I don't picture Kyle as someone who can rip our arms off.

It was simply an expression of my skepticism that players who suck and have something wrong with them are likely to get better, either because sometimes what's wrong can't be fixed, and sometimes because that's not really the reason why they suck.

The point is that nobody's depending on him, so "struggling because he can't see ball, which might be correctable" is a lot better than "can't hit breaking balls, which is almost certainly not correctable."
